Yeah it just hit me. I saw that starswirl comic a while back.
Unless this pony came before the comic... they based it off a fan character. |

^ It's fairly old merch according to the source, 2010/Y1, and the Star Swirl one is a special edition for the European market (check the languages and countries). You'd have to check dates. |

Star Swirl's been around since February 10, 2011 or earlier.
IIRC, before "Luna Eclipsed" the big reason people made a bunch of Star Swirl fanworks was to enter them in fan-run contests to win her brushable toy (since it's Europe-exclusive). |

The geniality of the fancomic was making the toy Star Swirl the descendant of cartoon Starswirl. The toy came first. (And of course, no relation made between the two made outside that comic.) |
