Maybe I feel this way because I come from a military family, but seriously guys, soldiers are just people like you and me. There's no reason to get your panties in a bunch over some shoop. |

To the person who shopped this picture, Rainbow Dash is not some "happy-go-round pony" but a symbol of an ideal, not much different than the Liberty striding through paintings of other battles.
At least Rainbow Dash is contributing to the original pretense, i.e. that this simple pole weighs 1000 pounds and needs at least five hard workers to lift. This historic moment was basically faked for the camera after the flag had already been up. And, of course, the flag is only a symbol itself. Once the supposed inviolacy of "reality" starts to come apart, it's hard to see what's so bad about attaching one fantastical allegory onto another, especially if it's in the most reverent way possible. |

Actually, the moment was real. The idea that it was staged started to due to some confusion about the event. It all started when the photographer (Joe) was asked, "Congratulations on the great photo Joe. Joe, did you pose it?'" And Joe said, 'Yes, of course'" However Joe had thought they were talking about a different photo he had staged and taken on the same day called the Gung-Ho Photo
It is true however the Flag Lifters were not under enemy fire when they were lifting the flag. Furthermore, the confusion stems from the fact that the photo at first glance makes it look like 4 guys were lifting the flag, when in actuality there are 6 guys |
