Stabs my heart out every time. She had no choice but to hurt her sister, unless she wanted the world to get turned into a lifeless ball of ice from a lack of sunlight.

I wouldn't wish such a thing upon my worst enemies. That's a special kind of hell.

Isn't the ponyworld round? I know I saw a globe a few times. What about the races on the other side? If Luna was so pissy about no one being awake during her shift, why didn't take a trip to the land of a nocturnal species? And how do the rest of the countries feel about ponies moving around the sun and moon like their own personal disco balls?

Wouldn't half the world burn while the other half freezes

Luna is her only (remaining) family, and the only friend she has that will supposedly never leave her. So she basically banished her only friend and only family. And I maintain that she didn't mean to, but the Elements weren't working properly due to her being in such a miserable state (being betrayed by her sister, etc.) The EoH, after all, only work when their bearer(s) are in a harmonious state of mind, and Celestia being as powerful as she is, she probably forced them to work anyways... With less than stellar results. Imagine living with that kind of guilt for a thousand years.

Impious realizes the true tragedy and nobility of Celestia's character.

It got better.

Provided Luna doesn't become a petty resentful little bitch again because of perceived inequality, and provided Celestia doesn't lose her shit either, they'll always have one another.

But only because she was weak and desperate for more power so that ponies would respect and revere her like they did her sister. You have to let the devil in, figuratively or literally. Power corrupts the weak. Fortunately, Luna's come a long way.

Maybe getting banished to your respective celestial body is the Alicorn equivalent of "Go to your room."
