Well it says 2001 in the tags so I figured it would be 2001: A Space Odyssey.

That is a movie that could never be made for today's audiences. Love it none the less.

@331
Yeah, today's audience, or at least the studio's perception of them, would be way to ADD to even get through the first 10 minutes even with all the screaming monkeys.

I remember being very young and asking my dad why the caveman threw a bone into the sky and suddenly the picture changed. He explained about metaphor, and that's the day I learned that a picture could have a non-literal meaning.

Call me a heretic or "stupid", but for me there's a line between being philosophical and pointlessly obtuse, and parts of that movie crossed that line. It's a decent enough film... if you ignore most of the bullshit philosophy and focus on the hard sci-if thriller aspects, but it's WAY overrated IMO. I don't and never will endorse the idea that fiction has to be cryptic and obtuse to be deep or meaningful.

Fair enough. The idea that fiction has to be cryptic and obtuse to be deep or meaningful is dumb. But by not providing examples to back up your statements or even explaining why you feel this movie is obtuse, I can only see your argument as a rant.

Mind you I agree this wasn't one of Kubrick's best works and in modern light it doesn't stand up as well as it once did, but the sheer level of influence it had is undeniable. Back in the 1960's nobody had even thought of making something like this. There's a reason this film is called the "big bang of science-fiction cinema.'"
