Fun fact: Separation of Church and State isn't actually any legal document or law of any kind. It was sent by Thomas Jefferson to a Baptist thing that was asking about it. Nothing more.
"... I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church and State." It doesn't appear in any kind of form of whatever to be upheld, but it is anyway. "Not said, but still held," so to speak. Eh? Eh? Eeeeeeh? |

@Chick
What did that have to do with anything at all? |
| Anonymous #1461638 3 weeks ago |
^ I believe the inferrence is that there are a lot of things that people believe to be "laws" that don't actually show up anywhere. Another example is that a lot of people think the Bible forbids masturbation even though it's never even mentioned. |
| Simlun #1461641 3 weeks ago |
^First of all, there was no reason for that to be posted on this image.
Second of all, the bible clearly says masturbation is forbidden. |
| Splinter17 #1461646 3 weeks ago |
^Lol nope it doesn't.
Also, love and tolerance was simply a way to deal with trolls, nothing more. |

I don't recall our fandom showing much love or tolerance towards Yamino when she expressed an oversensitive opinion about Derpy in The Last Roundup. In fact, an alarming number of Derpy fans still blame her for the episode getting altered, and they practically harassed her out of the community.
Even if her opinion about the episode (and other matters) reeked of “typical stupid college liberal,” the fact that she unfairly became a scapegoat when it got altered showed just how immature and irrational some people in this fandom are, and now there's one less person making high-quality Pony fan art because of it. That was probably one of the most outrageous incidents I've ever witnessed in a fandom, just short of people beating each other up over new video games at stores. Yamino did not cause the episode to get changed, and being mean to her has not gotten it changed back (if anything, the behavior I’ve seen from Derpy’s fans makes a strong case for why it should NOT be changed back). |
| PikaRobo #1461763 3 weeks ago |
^I think a good number of us are pretty much over that. |
| PikaRobo #1461767 3 weeks ago |
(Oh you've got to be fucking kidding me...) Please don't tell me there are still people who think that Yamino had anything to do with the Derpy incident.

The writer points out that she recieved 10 or so letters, specifically mentioning the terms 'derp' and 'ableist'.
If I'm not mistaken, didn't yamino bring that stuff up before the letters were recieved? Didn't yamino say she intends to send letters about it to the creators? Didn't she have a fan following that may account for the other letters? I won't claim 100% accuracy here, but unless every single word of that is incorrect, you're an idiot to think she had no involvement at all. |

@#1461774: Only the WRITER of the episode said she recieved letters from upset viewers. No-one knows how many letters Hasbro recieved. You'd have to be off your meds to think that one person on DeviantArt could cause an episode to get censored, because anyone thinking rationally and not with their derpyboner should be able to understand that. |

We really need this website to move forward... |
| ObssN #1461854 3 weeks ago |
@ChickNeighney:
Seperation of church and state = "No law respecting an establishment of religion"*. Different words used, same meaning. *As per the 1st Amendment and your own Jefferson quote. |
| bboifatz #1461865 3 weeks ago |
@ObssN: To take a scholarly look at the issue though, the wording in the constitution was meant to prevent the federal government from establishing a national religion. At the time, most states had official churches, and Jefferson stated in his letter to someone concerned about said state churches that it was not something that the president could change, and that it was something that the states would have to move away from on their own (which they did).
Many people (mistakenly) believe the phrase "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" in the constitution is a mandate for the federal government to ban religion from public life, which it is most definitely not, and yet people have successfully argued that the wording is vague enough to get the Ten Commandments removed from courts and ban nativity displays from schools at Christmas. |
| BackgroundPony17 #1461873 3 weeks ago |
From this thread I conclude that discorded Sweetie Belle takes the form of a 4chan/b/ troll. |
| ObssN #1461905 3 weeks ago |
@bboifatz:
"To take a scholarly look at the issue though, the wording in the constitution was meant to prevent the federal government from establishing a national religion." This is only true up until the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment, which subordinated State constitutions to the Federal Constitution. The Supreme Court made this connection when it came to religion in Everson v. Board of Education. It may or may not be incorrect to state that this is a "mandate for the federal government to ban religion* from public life" depending on what your definition of "public life" is. A man who stands on the sidewalk and says a prayer to himself is certainly in public and conducting his life, yet this is not banned. *As an aside, I usually find that people who say stuff like this really mean "Christianity" when they say "religion" in these contexts. You pretty much never hear about American Muslims, Hindu's, or Buddhist's complaining about the government "banning religion from public life"... |

I know this argument is long over, but I'm going to throw in my two cents.
Actually, Separation of Church and State is quite comparable to Love and Tolerance. Separation of Church and State: "-isn't actually any legal document or law of any kind." L&T: No "real lesson" about it in an episode. But in actuality: Separation of Church and State:"No law respecting an establishment of religion" L&T: Even if there wasn't an episode outright saying "Love and Tolerate", there was when Zecora and Luna were rejected because they were "weird" and "strange", but were later accepted when every-pony put their differences behind them. Also, on the subject of masturbation in the Bible, correct me if I'm wrong, I've been under the impression it is assumed to be a sin because of "But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." (Matthew 5:28) And that was taken as if sexual fantasies (at least of people you aren't/couldn't be in a relationship with, as it is with pornography) were a sin. Some people think that this means that masturbation is a sin because when you are masturbating, you are supposedly having sexual thoughts and fantasies, not the actual physical act of touching yourself down there. |

@ #1461846: I'm sure she had absolutely nothing to do with previously pressuring Hasbro to make WeLoveFine remove the name Derpy from the merchandise either, right?
Do you understand how powerful a few people can be with "political correctness" cries backing them up? The last thing the company is trying to be is controversial. You don't need a Derpyboner(tm) to see that her continual efforts to get rid of the name has caused or contributed to the end results. Maybe you need to take care of your Yaminoboner(tm) first and let the blood return so you can think more clearly. This anti-Derpy campaign of hers did not crop up overnight and when the opportunity presented itself she and her minions swooped in for the kill. Just because WE don't have evidence directly linking her to what she did, it doesn't mean her hands are clean. She's like the O.J. Simpson of our fandom. |

It's too bad L&T was never officially "a part of the fandom". Part of the reason i hate most fandoms is because they're mostly comprised of sycophantic a-holes.
That being said, official or no, MLP fandom tends to be a lot more "loving and tolerant" than most (despite some members desire not to be). I suppose it's par for the course for a fandom that is almost entirely composed of the periphery demographic. |

| The-Original-Dashie #1464003 2 weeks ago |
First of all: it's "tolerate and love"
Secondly: there are some things I will not tolerate, such as murder. Thirdly: it was never a 'motto' or a 'code' it was a counter-troll tactic. Fourthly: tolerance is a luxury for those without conviction. I have no problem with loving things (infact I think loving things is just dandy), but preaching tolerance of everything is foolhardy. Flame away ignorantly if you so desire. |
| Ananonymous #1464198 2 weeks ago |
@The-Original-Dashie currently i see tolerance as "don't add problems to problems", not "allow anything"
but that's a personal view unrelated to this fandom, motto/code, or the show it shouldn't be so strange for people to indirectly bring their experiences and ideas/values in fandoms whenever they interact with others and a part of the current fandom (like me) joined when the 1st 4chan age was long over, when said motto had lost part of it's use as counter-trolling @Splinter17 parrots are parrots, judging the actions is often more accurate than judging the words to say, some may be following the motto only because they emulated it from others, while others translated in it their own values they already had before coming in the fandom |
