Lol. According to description in the source, Rarity is a douche. I agree with that comment. She only pretended to like Spike for his gems.
Its a strange story. Spike is a really tragic character. He doesn't know where he came from, can't live with his own kind and will outlive all his pony friends. Then there's this Fancypants. He has everything. Good looks, wealth, status. He could have anything he wanted. The happiest thing that ever happened in Spike's life was probably meeting Rarity. But this Rarity would never like him for who he really is, she's just after his gemstones... I wish I could say there was another girl but there isn't in canon. Sweetie Belle is still fanon until they start sharing episode together. |

I had an idea for a fanfic where Spike ask Fancypants for help to conquer Rarity but at the end he realizes that she doesn't love him back or something. |
| candrew #1452802 1 month ago |
I don't know, I just never felt a romantic vibe from fancy Pants/ Rarity's interaction, which is odd because on paper he's everything Rarity is looking for in a suitor. In part I got the impression that their relationship was more business partnership then anything, especially since Pants seems to be old enough to be her father. |

rarity is a spoiled rich white pony. lol. but that can be an advantage too. when spike is a full grown dragon with sh*tloads of gems and riches, how could rarity turn that down? |

Many fans think of Rarity as greedy. If she likes Spike, its because of his fire ruby. If she likes Fancypants its because he's not a penny-less mud pony. |
| Anonymous #1453154 1 month ago |
Rarity cares for Spike as a younger brother-type, and even as a friend to an extent. She does care about his feelings, and expresses this as best she can but obviously, the two of them only have so much in common and it's not like she's going to hang out with him one-on-one for companionship alone. That doesn't mean she doesn't like or care about him though, or that she uses him.
Likewise, she never really has shown any romantic interest in Fancypants. They seem to have a strictly platonic relationship based on a mutual respect for one another, and potential business opportunities as someone else noted. It did look like she was making eyes at him in the photo at the end of the finale, but then we've seen her make the same expression at many other ponies in the past, including her friends and it only seems to be ship hungry fan thinking that reads anything romantic into it. Most likely, if the writers intended for him to be a romantic interest for her, they would have clearly written him as such, or made it more clear she was interested in him. And Rarity is hardly greedy and selfish... anyone who thinks so clearly hasn't actually watched the show at all. She does have her own hopes and dreams, but doesn't take advantage of others and happily gives of herself all the time. She represents the element of generosity for a reason. |
| Anonymouz #1453305 1 month ago |
Lol. Rarity should be scared for manipulating Spike's feelings because if all else fails, rape.
@1453154 If you haven't noticed, all of Rarity's sight gags revolve around greedy and selfish acts. The gems from the red dragon's lair in Dragonshy being the earliest I can remember along with several other instances later on. They're never taken seriously other than for laughs. She really is depicted as greedy but for laughs. As for the things they have in common, compared to all the main characters, Spike and Rarity seem to have the most in common. Which is strange because they seem like conveniently seeded characteristics by the writers to ease out interaction between them for whatever reason. Otherwise, we should have already seen scenes where Spike helps AJ pick apples or helps Pinkie Pie bake pastries yet the scenes are non-existent. |
| Anonymous #1453350 1 month ago |
My point about Rarity is that she is not at all a selfish character by nature. She is vain, and fond of material things but at the end of the day, she's willing to let all of that go (being willing to give up things that she values, which is the very definition of generosity) for the sake of others.
I think the scenes with Spike helping Rarity out were all for "sight gags" as well, to set up a situation for his crush to play out. He has been seen "helping" Applejack as well (and Rainbow Dash, in the Iron Pony competition), as well as Fluttershy when he offers to watch her pets for her, and in "Hurricane Fluttershy". No Rarity present in either instance, and I'm sure there are other cases as well. And what do they have in common, really? Even age difference and species differences aside, which are huge, personality-wise they have almost nothing in common, aside from a love for gems and even that's for entirely different reasons (Spike just likes to eat them). Even with, say, Applejack for instance who is probably her polar opposite, the two of them are both business owners who share a similar hard work ethic and are responsible for their younger sisters to some degree. |

@1453350
Nothing in common, really? - Attraction to gemstones, no matter the purpose but they love it. - Greed/Generosity Duality, Discorded Rarity is greedy as hell as Greedy Spike. - The same preference for romance which being both fairytale-ish in theme. He dreams of being a knight who saves his princess in distress while she dreams of being a princess who meets her prince charming at a royal ball. - Both suffer from trying to fit into groups that are primarily comprised of jerks but in the end refuse to compromise themselves to achieve what they thought they wanted. (As seen on "Sweet and Elite" and "Dragon Quest" - They care of each other, example when Spike tries to defend Rarity from the Diamond Dogs or Rarity trying to protect Spike from the Teenage Dragons. Coincidence? There is a lot of parallelism between them. |

@1453350
QuelloScelto has posted all the things they have in common. You won't see it on the surface but deep down, Spike and Rarity have strange similarities. The funny part is, those similarities don't need to be there for their characters to function. Would Spike be any different if he didn't eat gems? Would Rarity be any different if she wasn't the Element of Generosity? Yet the writers placed them there anyway. |
| AkatsukiKaizoku #1453917 1 month ago |
I dunno, Rarity just loves gems, but she is still a generous pony no matter what.
There is a reason why she is the element of Generosity, and it's because that even in her slip offs, she regains her attitude and DOES makes up for her mistakes. She may not be my best pony, but gosh, I love Rarity a lots. |

I have all the episodes in my hard drive. Maybe I should make screen caps of all the times Rarity was greedy and turn them into memes like this one.

Thanks to QuelloScelto for pointing out the similarities between Spike and Rarity. That particular statement is one of the more nonsensical complaints about Sparity. |
| Anonymous #1455900 3 weeks ago |
@Anonymouz All of the characters in Friendship is Magic have a lot of personality traits that don't need to be there for their characters to function... that's part of what makes them great, deep characters who are entertaining to watch, and what sets the show apart from much of the cookie-cutter drivel made for kids these days. And if you're going to make memes out of screen caps, are you going to do it for when Rarity displayed her generosity too? Or when Applejack wasn't honest (Party of One, for example), and so on? I guess I don't really understand your point there, in other words.
Again, I don't see how the gem thing should count because while Rarity is obviously highly attuned and connected to them (her cutie mark, her special talent for finding gems, her love of them and beautiful things, etc.) Spike only likes to eat them, which is merely a superficial (and again, species) trait. If you're going to count something like that as a reason for them being similar, then why not talk about how Spike likes to makes jokes and eat junk food, like Pinkie Pie? The fact that he thinks of himself as being athletic and suave and frequently makes cocky, humorous remarks about it, like Rainbow Dash? Just among other examples. The greed/generosity duality thing, if anything, should show how they are very different from one another, not similar. Spike's greed is, again, a species trait he has to deal with, and Rarity was turned greedy by Discord... she was made the opposite of what she's supposed to be. It doesn't show how they, as characters, have something in common. And Rarity is obviously a romantic, but she is so by nature, whereas Spike is only "romantic" in the sense that he fantasizes about Rarity due to his crush, and not because he's really be interested in reading romance novels or watching soap operas like she probably would be. His case was an isolated incident in other words, while Rarity's is tied into her love of art, beauty and the dramatic. With Sweet and Elite and Dragon Quest, if you're going to count that then why not count Rainbow Dash's friendship with Gilda and how she refused to compromise herself or her new friends at the end, or how Fluttershy was making an effort to toughen up to the degree of hurting her friends, only to realize the error of this thinking at the end? They have about as much in common as the other two episodes do... all four of those examples demonstrate a character not being willing to compromise their values for the sake of something they supposedly wanted, which is a very common trope in many stories and is hardly unique here. I'm sure season 3 will bring many more examples of this as well. The last example about them caring for each other is pretty ridiculous, because ALL of the main group obviously care about each other and have stood up for one another, and tried to protect each other before. The others stood up for Spike in front of the teenage dragons after all, Fluttershy faced a dragon for all of her friends before, etc.... it really is silly to use that for an example because again, that's something they all have in common and it's hardly exclusive to Rarity and Spike. I guess what I'm saying is, there are parallels if you look for them, but the same thing is true of every single character and their relationships with one another. Spike and Rarity still have very, very little in common personality wise, which isn't a bad thing or doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to be friends of whatever, but ya'll are saying it like it's something special that sets them apart from all the other characters and their relationships with each other, which isn't the case. The only thing that does that for Rarity and Spike are his feelings for her, which she may or may not reciprocate... but that's a whole 'nother debate for a different day. @candrew I don't think personality differences should necessarily hold bearing on whether or not a ship should work, and I don't believe we were talking about Sparity here anyway. At least I know I wasn't. |

Okay, that was pretty mean of me. But if what you say is true, how come we get Spike/Rarity episodes? For example, both episodes made use of their shared appreciations for gemstones as a very important story driver. Don't get me wrong, I want to see Spike have episodes with other ponies too like Pinkie Pie where they bake stuff or with RD where they prank ponies. Spike/CMC episode, for example. But they don't exist other than as throw away side details instead of the center of a story. His episodes are ever only shared with Twilight or Rarity. Its a fact. |
