It is really sad that the mainstream public only knows Germany for the 3rd Reich. I had a looong talk with my "friend" who sat next to me in a Community College history class about how it's not remotely funny or in particularly good taste to whisper "heil Hitler," every single freakin' time our prof mentioned Germany.
What makes it even worse is the fact that, I quote: "the first country Hitler invaded was his own." The Germans suffered just as much under Hitler as the rest of the world, and yet the current generation of Germans still is made to feel responsible and ashamed of their own nation that's come so far. |
