Frankly, giving Twilight's bouts of mental instability when pressured I'd have to pick Rarity. Certainly she can whiny, melodramatic, and a bit bitchy, which the fandom loves to play up.
But she never decided that stopping time was the way to deal with a problem. |

Lol. Rarity's been always a gold digger. Spike wasn't the first dragon she tried to steal from. She tried to take gems from that red dragon in Dragonshy way back in season 1. Of course, back then, it was used as a gag while the fire ruby scene in SomE was treated sincerely so it gained more notice. Speaking of sincerity, I would choose Twilight too over Rarity by measurements of sincerity. When Twilight talks, I find her voice very gentle and caring but when Rarity talks, she sounds condescending to me. |

@198, CronoM
It's not about her being a fashionista. It's about her awful personality. She didn't finish Twilight's present and then made an excuse to not go to her birthday party just to hang out with a more "popular" crowd. She ditched her friends because they weren't cool enough for her. She seduced Spike into giving up something he really wanted. She is a terrible friend in a show about friendship. That is why she is the worst pony. |

Oh nooo she made bad choices. Despite sacrificing a lot for her friends by ditching her business to be with them all the time. In Sweet and Elite she was faced with her lifelong dream and she made a bad choice because of it, big deal. The fire ruby example is stupid. She showed Spike genuine warmth and affection, praised him openly, made capes in his honor, protected said gem with her life while commenting on it being important to her because of the dragon it came from, and saved Ponyville in the process. It's not like she's the only pony to do bad things. RD has put her friends in mortal danger several times throughout the show: provoking the dragon in dragonshy, making the situation between the buffalo and Appleoosa worse, and didnt save a pony from falling because she was signing an autograph. |

@Whatevs
All the ponies have flaws and they all make mistakes. When the other five ponies make mistakes, it generates 2 reactions from me. Its either sympathy or it makes me laugh. With Rarity, it just makes me laugh. I find it very hard to be sympathetic towards a character that made mistakes rooted in selfishness. Especially if they get away with it without repercussions like in SaE. |
| Anonymouz #1440087 1 month ago |
@Whatevs
What gifts are you talking about? If its the blue sapphire in ADaPS, it was kind of payment for helping her dig gems. You don't work for your gifts. If its the bow tie, she made it moot in the same episode for giving the same gift to an owl that did nothing compared to Spike who worked hard for the picnic. That's how much she valued Spike back then, she gave him worthless stuff she could spare. |
| Whatevs #1441084 1 month ago |
@Anonymouz
Why is self-interest so bad? Being generous is much more significant than loyalty, or kindness and much more detrimental. While I agree they havent had Rarity do anything generous that was particularly memorable in S2, and that isnt good. I dont see why her being selfish in pursuit of what she wants diminishes her being generous with what she has, particularly when she is worried about losing what she really wants. Now her actions in Sweet and Elite were bad, however that's par for the course. Missed the point I see... she wouldnt have had to pay him if she were exploiting his crush, and the same for the bowtie in Owl's Well that Ends Well. She was not obligated to give either, so the argument that she "stole" his gem makes little sense considering her past behavior, particularly when the scene he gave it to her in was a callback to the scene in ADaPS (with the sparkly bedroom eyes) where she gave him the blue gem. All that combined with her behavior in the rest of the episode, being eager to follow Spike in Dragon Quest to make sure he was okay and being very comfortable around him suggests the opposite of what you're implying. |

@Whatevs
All the ponies have flaws and interests. The difference with Rarity isn't how her motives are bad, but its how they're portrayed. The sad part was, in SaE, Rarity knew what she was doing was wrong from the get go but decided to ride it anyway until she was cornered and forced to come clean. If she was never caught, she would've kept living the lie. When other ponies flaws are centered on, especially RD, they're usually oblivious of what they're doing wrong. But once they notice it within the same episode, they don't just say sorry but they exert effort to correct the wrong that they did. Rarity does this too in her other episode but unlike other ponies, they don't have SaE. >She was not obligated to give either, so the argument that she "stole" his gem makes little sense considering her past behavior I do not understand your logic on that second paragraph. How did you come to that conclusion since none of those episodes were connected to each other in any way. Rarity didn't steal his gem, she tricked him into giving it to her by showing how much she admired it. That's how she manipulated his feelings. His crush was insignificant to her in S1. It wasn't until S2 that she found it beneficial for her to indulge Spike because she discovered he had access to a fire ruby. I wouldn't think of it that much if they were equals but they're not. Spike is an innocent little kid that doesn't know any better while Rarity's a responsible adult. Even if the kid was willing to give it to her out of generous innocence, he's a kid, he doesn't know any better. But Rarity's an adult so she SHOULD have known better than to take from a kid. If Spike wanted to give the fire ruby before Rarity even realized she wanted it, then it would have been also a completely different story. Remove that fire ruby from the equation, and she would never have started that pet name thing. All she sees in him is his ruby, not the great selfless friend that Spike is. Otherwise, she would have been doing that Spikey Wikey thing way back in S1. |
| Whatevs #1442975 1 month ago |
@Anonymouz
Well Rarity grew up poor (ish) and has always wanted to reach the upper crust. And has put a lot of effort into reaching that goal, so obviously she would take a shortcut when it presented itself. Especially when she takes time away from realizing her dream to help her friends frequently. I never said what she was doing was right however I merely understand. >She indulged Spike because it was beneficial All she said was the Fire Ruby was beautiful. Everything past that is how Spike see's Rarity. The scene where "she tricked him" was a reference to the scene in A Dog and Pony Show where she gave him a gem, same animation. So saying she tricked him makes little sense. You have not addressed this yet. You havent been convincing at all that she tricked him into giving up the gem She protected the fire ruby, stating that it was important to her because of where it came from and who gave it to her. Hence sentimental value, meaning that she doesnt value the thing itself. Furthermore, one could argue that her calling him Spikey-wikey is a way to be more affectionate without being romantic. His crush being insignificant to her back in S1 only means that it has become more so. I could also argue that since his crush on her was insignificant to her that she didnt consider it when admiring the fire ruby. Also you are commenting on me stringing together "unconnected episodes" and then attempt to do the same yourself with the "way she treated him back in S1." |
| Whatevs #1442989 1 month ago |
@Anonymouz
Saying that she wouldve done Spikey-wikey and been more comfortable around him back in season 1 makes little sense when he was just a kid who had a crush she assumed would pass or little would come of it. It's almost as if their relationship has changed... who would have thought that? |
| Whatevs #1443002 1 month ago |
And also if she were indulging Spike only when beneficial, she wouldnt see the need to tag along with RD and Twilight to make sure he was okay in Dragonshy when she could have stayed at her boutique.
Her change in behavior suggests that she likes Spike more so than before, but what she said when protecting the gem suggests it is not because of the gem. It is because of the gesture behind the gem. Her constantly praising him in public and making capes inspired by him also indicates that she was more taken with the gesture than the gem. |
| Anonymouz #1443123 1 month ago |
@Whatevs
Lol, you almost sound like a butt hurt shipper. Spike never changed. He has always been kind and generous towards any pony and not just Rarity. But Rarity never saw this. The dumb things he did in S1 were his way of showing this to Rarity especially since he liked her. It wasn't until the ruby that she took notice of it which is sad because there's more to Spike than a ruby. This only implies he only liked Spike for his ruby. It really doesn't matter if you're convinced or not. A lot of more people think this way about Rarity and for good reason. Even her occasionally harmless sight gags revolve around selfishness. Its only consistent that she would trick Spike because she is selfish. She was worried about Spike because without him, she won't have anymore free rare gems from him in the future. |
| Whatevs #1443177 1 month ago |
@Anonymouz
And you sound like someone who was pussy whipped in high school and now looks for reasons to dislike a fictional character. If she didnt feel there was more to Spike than a rock then why did she praise him publicly, make capes in his honor, stick up for him, follow him to make sure he was okay, console him after causing massive destruction, and comment on the sentimental value of the rock? And also you missed the point again. RD and Twilight were already going to make sure he was okay, she did not have to go herself. So being worried about "no more free gems" does not explain her going when there was no need for her to go. None of those things you said corroborate your view. The only thing that makes your perspective work is if we assume what you are trying to prove, that she tricked him and will continue to trick him despite having ample opportunity to do it earlier (like in A Dog and Pony Show, she really loves gems so it wouldve been easy to merely exploit his crush rather than give him the biggest gem they found). Her aggregate behavior, both prior to and proceeding, the Fire Ruby does not suggest what you are implying unless we assume what you have tried and failed to convey. I have laid out counterpoints against you several times and you merely ignore them, because you cant respond to them. Yes Rarity is selfish, that has always been her flaw. From episode 1 it was established that she wants a lot out of life. The point is (or was) that she also gave a lot away and was generous with what she had. They didnt have this in season 2, or it was easy to miss, which is why I understand those criticisms of her. Also, being 'selfish' for gags in minor ways does not imply one would trick someone one knows and has shown genuine concern for into giving something up. Also in response to an earlier point, Rarity is not the first do something knowingly bad: Twilight dishonestly used magic in Winter Wrap Up essesntially because she wanted to fit in and help out, RD purposely used her wings in Fall Weather Friends to win competitions she would have otherwise lost and AJ was dishonest in the Last Round Up because she didnt want her friends to learn of her shame. Now these are subdued compared to Sweet and Elite but the temptation was also greater in S and E. Rarity has always wanted to be a part of high society, it is her dream, so she took an early entrance into her dream life when it presented itself. You're arguments are terrible. My thoughts are incredibly disorganized right now and even so you cant provide much of a response. That's why you are playing the "nothing will convince you card" as a way to save face (on the internet lol). It's not that nothing will convince me, but you clearly cant. |

^ Well done, Whatevs. I don't really agree with the whole "Rarity is deepest pony" thing, I concur that she gets more fan baggage than the rest, even though they both have prominent good and bad signs, even if they're not overt.
Rarity: Empathetic and selfless but her business makes her have to do selfish things for it do go booming (Canterlot episode) Twi: Rational and open minded but her by the books approach makes her seem lacking common sense, especially with Celestia. AJ: Usually accepting of others' flaws and has strong work ethics but stubborn as hell. Fluttershy: Warm hearted and non-judgmental but... occasionally psycho. RD: Loyal, honest, and fun but arrogant to a sometimes scary level. Pinkie: Very fun but can be too childish. It really just matters on your views. |
