Wouldn't Equestria technically be a theocracy?

@Anon 4746: It depends on whether or not Celestia and Luna are considered gods the same way humans revere gods. They are definitely superior life forms of some kind, but they don't seem to mandate any kind of ethical guidelines nor do they demand worship the way human gods do. Unless, of course, friendship is that ethical guideline. In which case, Twilight Sparkle is actually some kind of priestess or prophet, and not just a student.

^ While it is odd considering the direction the show actually goes, Twilight is close to that.

When they showed Celestia with the cake and the headline 'just like us', she was appalled. Along with the fact that they replace 'god' expressions with Celestia right now, suggests that it really might be a theocracy.

A theocracy where those chosen have a personal relationship with god. Instead of being a perfect being, she is both perfectly moral, and mortally flawed, at the same time.

A very interesting concept for religion.

^However true that may be, I personally think she may be talking about a lost period of history from around the Paleopony era in which the Earth Ponies had a monarchy. From what I understand, this event almost ended in the extinction of the Earth Ponies.
