Considering the vast difference between the two times we saw Spike grow up, I like to think that his emotions and attitude will determine what he looks like and how big he get's. Who knows, maybe he wont be any bigger than Big Mac. |

I wonder what Spike really sees in Rarity. She's not the only pretty looking unicorn in Ponyville. There's probably dozens of them.
She's too picky, too critical, narcissistic, manipulative and self serving. You'd think he'd figure that out by now. Unless there's something about Rarity none of us can see and only Spike can. Gemstones irl look like dirty rocks the first time they're dug up and won't look like the ones we see in stores until they've been cleaned and cut. |

@Anonymouz: Complete Wild Mass Guessing (or simple silly hypothesis-play); Female dragons curl their tail to display willingness for courtship - Rarity, albeit unintentionally, displays some very, very strong dragon signals. |
| candrew #1433751 1 month ago |
You know, I find it odd that so many works of fiction use the difference in species to say that Sparity wouldn't work out, but it never comes up on the show itself. |
| Anonymous #1433985 1 month ago |
@candrew: So true, dude. To be honest, I'm sure Spike sees something more in Rarity that she doesn't see in herself really. |
| Anonymouz #1434218 1 month ago |
@candrew
Its not because dragons and unicorns are incompatible, its because Spike is a racial minority and Rarity is racist. Think about it. She's racist towards mules. Her preference in males are white, blue eyed unicorn stallions loaded with money. Spike's nothing like that. |
| Whatevs #1434309 1 month ago |
@Anonymouz
Narcissistic: No, she cares about her appearance but a narcissist goes well beyond that. Rd has more in common with a narcissist that Rarity Self-serving:Yes and no. She is generous with what she has but can be self-serving with what she wants. That's her primary flaw. Merely being "selfish" in pursuit of what you want does not diminish being generous with what you have. Racist: when she said the mule line, mules werent in the show yet. Also mules are not a race of horse, the horse races would be unicorn, pegasus and earth pony since they are distinct and can breed together. So mules would be a different species. Her preference being white, blue eyed unicorns is not racist since that is how she and her family are, and people irl tend to gravitate towards those whose features are similar to their own and their family members. And yes a dragon/pony relationship wouldnt not work out, dragons grow up to be gigantic, live in caves and migrate. Furthermore Rarity and Spike have very little in common at all. Think next time. |
| Whatevs #1434363 1 month ago |
Critical: Can be, but also frequently lauds ponies on their talents: Calls RD a great flyer, states that Fluttershy has tremendous grace and poise and would therefore make a great model for her clothing, encouraged Twilight to keep trying to make a bird nest, said Twilight was great at magic, etc etc. She is most critical with herself, not others.
Manipulative: When? The dragon is dragonshy? Sure. The nerd pony? No, he cut Fluttershy off so she did what would ensure Fluttershy leaving with asparagus, in fact she basically bought the asparagus for Fluttershy. The Fire Ruby? Again no, Rarity has given Spike gifts before. The scene in which he gave it to her was a role reversal of the scene in A Dog And Pony Show where she gave him a gem, sparkly bedroom eyes and all, because that is how he sees her. Furthermore, she wouldn’t have praised him openly, made capes in his honor, or protected the gem with her life while stating that is is important to her because of the dragon who gave it to her and the gesture he showed in doing so. and as an addendum: She was more attracted to Prince Blueblood being Prince Charming than his money, since that is what dominated her fantasy. Moreover, who cares? |

Whatevs, have my internet. |
| candrew #1434895 1 month ago |
@Whatevs: I disagree about the dragon/pony relationship frankly because we know next to nothing about dragons. Certainly they grow huge, but at what rate? The migration is a once in a pony lifetime event and its already happened.
As to not having anything in common, they have the same core group of friends, they both love gems (though for different reasons), they both seem to have an interest in fairytale romance, and they both tend to struggle with greed. Honestly, I think they'd make an interesting couple but its not bound to ever really be resolved in the show. Fortunately though, this is a Sparity comic so I know it will work out here at least. |
| Whatevs #1434941 1 month ago |
@Candrew
You reminded me of something, Spike is going to live for 1000 years longer than Rarity. That's a legitimate problem in of itself. Im just going to assume since Rarity is a mammal and Spike is a reptile their lifestyles will be incompatible. Id rather just see Spike find a female dragon and Rarity a colt who are both compatible with their goals in life. But that's opinion. |
| candrew #1434969 1 month ago |
^ I fail to see how Spike's lifespan would be a problem. Certainly it'd be sad but future sadness is no reason to avoid seeking a relationship. Also, Spike was raised by ponies and lives an entirely pony lifestyle so the differences in culture are moot in my view.
I can certainly understand, if not agree with, your opinion that it would be easier to date within species but I find it odd that you mentioned compatibility with life goals. Is there some reason Spike would be a detriment to her fashion design? Fashion favors the eccentric after all. |
| Whatevs #1434994 1 month ago |
He might.
Im just tired of this whole Sparity subject tbh. It's just filled with guys who are mad that "some girl didnt sleep with them even though they were nice to her." Too many levels of irony in that for me to explore. And then they spew a bunch of vitriol because Rarity doesnt have a scaly fetish and/or Spike looks like a dumpy kid (meaning it would be creepy). You arent doing these things, and Im not accusing you of them but maybe you can understand my temperament. |
| candrew #1435045 1 month ago |
Listen, I won't lie. Sparity has some asshole fans, as does the brony community, and pretty much anything in general. Personally, I've never seen any evidence of what you're talking about but I don't doubt its happened.
That said I've seen legions of anti-Sparity folks that I find just as annoying as you find the douche fans so I understand your point. Honestly, I just enjoy talking about these kinds of things in a calm, respectful manner. I like Sparity, have seen the first time I saw episode one, and I've been glad to see it grow both in the show and in the fandom. I'll make no bones about the fact I'm an incorrigible romantic at heart who loves the underdog. I appreciate your view point and I thank you for expressing your thoughts in a considerate manner. |

| Anonymouz #1435364 1 month ago |
@Whatevs and candrew
Lol, I'm probably one of those douche Sparity fans you're talking about but for all the strangest of reasons. Spike is my favorite character while Rarity is my least liked character. I ship them because Rarity's abuse all the more makes Spike sympathetic while Spike's depressing crush all the more makes hate bait for Rarity. There's a difference between being rejected but still wanting to be friends from having your feelings taken advantage of while making you think you have a chance with the girl to begin with. I see Spike and Rarity as an example of the later because of their canon personalities. She takes advantage of his not so secret crush to get free favors from him and she's gonna keep doing it as long as he stays gullible. Granted, no attempts at courtship have ever happened in canon so no opportunities at rejection have ever occurred either. I doubt any of that would ever happen on the show but I hope it does. Once Rarity breaks Spike's heart, all the Rarity fan hate would be delicious especially the ones coming from the Spike fans. |
| candrew #1436313 1 month ago |
^ That's a...unique reason to ship them I suppose, though I will say I think Whatevs did a fine job in explaining Rarity's personality earlier. |
| Whatevs #1438138 1 month ago |
@Anonymouz
She does not lead him on. True she hasnt discouraged him, which is why I personally think she teared up at the End of Secret of my Excess, she felt that she couldnt delay 'rejecting' him anymore. But onto the argument, that she doesnt lead him on: she called him a "little star" in the owl episode (Pinkie also called him Spikey-wikey), that isnt a romantic thing to call someone so that one is out.. she also gave him a bowtie but that doesnt change anything she had him help her find gems, but she paid him for it and they a very nice and amicable conversation (like friends) so that one is out too... She had him help her in Green Isnt Your Color, but also had help from others so that one is out too... There are the times he gets sheepish around her, but she doesnt do anything to cause that so those dont count... There's the Fire Ruby, that's the closest but even I dont buy that, especially since she had given him gifts in two prior examples when she would not have had to if she were exploiting his crush. She definitely wanted it, but all she said was that it was "beautiful." The sparkly bedroom eyes was a callback to the scene in Dog and Pony Show where Spike receives a gem from her; that being how HE sees her. Also her behavior following that and when he kidnaps her corroborates this conclusion so Id say this one is out too.. (being affectionate, publicly praising him, making capes for her friends because of how generous he was, protecting the gem with her life while referencing the dragon who gave it to her and gesture he showed in doing so etc) There's Dragon Quest, the way she treated him is really no different than the way he had been treated before (by her and the other ponies), just exaggerated (Merriwether) so he would feel emasculated and get the plot going... |
| candrew #1438604 1 month ago |
^ If she was rejecting him at the end of SoME she did a poor job of it. Calling him her hero and kissing him on the check and all. |
| Whatevs #1438716 1 month ago |
@candrew
I wasnt suggesting that she did reject him, but that she feels she is going to have to face the problem. And since his crush is not a well kept secret around Ponyville it could be pretty bad... And I dont think saying it after he just wrecked the town and was feeling bad wouldve been a good idea. Just a theory, honestly my ideas on their relationship are not all that well fleshed out. I care about her more than him, I think she had (hopefully still has) the potential to be a great character. And truth be told I blame a lot on SoME. I dont know if the writers decided to pander to us a little, but teasing the relationship like that with the Fire Ruby is the source of a lot of criticisms of her. Prior to that with SS and SaE (despite being what I would call negative epsides) she had a great season 2. |
| Anonymous #1439004 1 month ago |
@Whatevs
I couldn't agree more... you've said everything. I think the Spike-Rarity relationship is cute when it's a one-sided crush from Spike's side, but beyond that it starts getting to be very far-fetched and even into creepy territory. I don't think there is *anything* that has happened in episodes that proves that Rarity cares for Spike as anything more than a little brother, and in fact there is more evidence that she *doesn't* share his feelings. But, you've already listed and touched on them a lot better than I probably would and so I'll just say that I agree with you 100%. |
| Anonymouz #1439058 1 month ago |
@Whatevs
I would rather have an episode where Rarity tells Spike that she's flattered by his crush but is too young for her. Spike doesn't take it personally and admits that its true. It doesn't change Spike's opinion of Rarity and continues to do favors for her because she is still his friend and his favorite pony. Happy end. Did they do that? Nope. I wish they did, though. Spike's crush on her is depressing so they shouldn't treat it so vaguely. Why did they even explore it? I don't know since it pretty much served a comedic yet cruel purpose as a recurring gag in S1. |
| candrew #1439314 1 month ago |
^^ Frankly, I have to disagree. At the end of the day, FIM is a show that is lacking solid continuity for the most part. Yet throughout the show we have seen an evolution of the relationship between Spike and Rarity. We are well past the point where she uses him as a pincushion. I for one look forward to see how it develops as they are probably my two favorite characters. |
| Anonymous #1442351 1 month ago |
One thing I'm wondering now, that I didn't think about was this... is Rarity saying this because of her feeling a need to belong? We know Rarity's had those feelings for a long time, like her wanting to fit in in places like Canterlot. And we've seen how that kind of peer pressure's made her brush off her friends before she realizes how close they are to her. So what I figure besides the obvious to her is if Rarity is saying what she's saying due to feelings of peer pressure on herself to be a part of the "It" crowd...? Anyone?
-Bryon- |
| candrew #1443330 1 month ago |
^ The thing is, she isn't say 'I don't feel that way about you', she's saying 'I've thought about and I don't think it will work.' It wouldn't surprise me if she was considering her position in Canterlot at least a little, but given how easily led the Canterlot elite are I can't imagine it being a long term problem. |
| Anonymous #1443405 1 month ago |
^ Thanks for that, candrew. I know whatcha mean. Look at how it was in "Sweet and Elite" when Rarity was in Canterlot and how influenced others were at times because of some things like Fancy Pants' acknowledgement and such.

| candrew #1443660 1 month ago |
^ The thing about Rarity, and Rainbow Dash for that matter, is that she has a big dream. The rest of the mane 6 are more or less content where they are now: Twilight studying magic, Applejack at her far, Pinkie throwing parties, and Fluttershy with her animals. Rarity, on the other hand, wants to be the top of the fashion world, a pony everypony should know, and as such she tends to focus more on image than the others. How others perceive her is important to her business and her future, and a lot of her character growth has involved getting over her obsession with appearance.
Fancy Pants seems to be the exception to normal high society behavior, and either because of this or in spite of it he holds tremendous sway over what is acceptable and what isn't. It is obvious that if now for his direct intervention Rarity would have been in a bind due to some of the events in SaE and her business could have suffered greatly. Spike is an anomaly, while he has several good characteristics, he's still a dragon. A dragon that has chosen to live as a pony, but still an apex predator. And Rarity is a romantic, she's looking for the one, her prince. In stories, princes tend to slay dragons. We know how this will end. Its a Sparity comic after all. How it gets there will be interesting to see however. Also, your welcome. Frankly, I'm just glad to be discussing the comic and Sparity in general as opposed to having defend the very possibility of the pairing. The only possible romantic interest in the show between two not-married characters, one of which already has feelings for the other, and all you ever see are people complaining about it. |
| candrew #1443663 1 month ago |
^ Wow, that went on longer than I thought it would. |
| Anonymous #1444554 1 month ago |
^ No worries, man. To be honest, I've seen the possibilities of Sparity occuring because of how their relationship has grown little by little. Like how Rarity was so touched by Spike's generosity with the Fire Ruby and how sweet she was with him, even when calling him Spikey Wikey for it! :)
-Bryon- |
| candrew #1444620 1 month ago |
Frankly, it feels good to let out even a small rant on occasion. It really is interesting to see how their relationship has changed over the course of the show, particularly since so little in the way of continuity seems to be allowed.
In the beginning, obviously, she didn't particularly care for him, most likely only seeing him as Twilight's assistant. Mow, even if you don't see the possibility of a romantic relationship, you can't deny they are good friends. |
