They weren't near the statue when fighting.

Because it required the CMC. They're WAY more important to the show's whole than the creators initially let on.

@Crobarity Who in the world would start fighting in front of the statue knowing he could absorb their negative feelings and ressurect? Why is cheerilee a teacher again?

Because the CMC are the harbingers of the apocalypse.

the seal on discord was still strong and finally wakened enough for him to escape as princess Celestia said, i dont think friends fighting had anything to do with it.

Because they weren't friends yet? Or at least not best friends.

Actually, I'm pretty sure them fighting was actually brought on from Discord already starting to break free, they just had the misfortune of being affected by him

Discord was released because the elements had weakened over the thousand years that they were sitting in Celestia's old castle. The CMC were either the straw that broke the camel's back or Discord's morning stretch.

That, and the extra chaos they were starting to put off only helped quicked his release I suppose

They weren't fighting near the statue, first of all. Secondly, Discord escaped because Celestia and Luna lost their connections to the Elements of Harmony.

Precisely. There's nothing that says the CMC were responsible for releasing Discord. The only explanation given is that the seal on him was weakened since Celestia and Luna couldn't harness the Elements of Harmony anymore (I presume because of the Nightmare Moon incident).

It seems like they released him, I'll admit. But it's entirely ambiguous. There's nothing that really supports or confirms it.

I like to think that their fighting, and the way the scene was set up, was to sort of foreshadow the way the Elements of Harmony were going to be torn apart as friends, at least.

Maybe they did release him. But I'm not convinced.

I don't know, I mean the CMC represent EACH of the pony races, and are also really good friends, fighting in front of the spirit of Chaos and Disharmony. If that's not the recipe for breaking a weakened seal, I don't know what is.

And the CMC are tangentially linked to the bearers of the Elements of Harmony. I'm sure that could mean something...maybe.

These sort of things tend to be complicated.

Or you're reading to much into this.

From his bio:

"Discord is the primary antagonist featured in The Return of Harmony Part 1 and Part 2. Previously, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna had imprisoned him in stone with the Elements of Harmony. But when the Elements are transferred to Twilight Sparkle and her friends, Discord escapes from his stony prison and starts to wreak chaos."

The CMC were foreshadowing to what was going to happen, that's all. You know, best friends fighting?

I agree that the scene with the CMC was likely meant to be foreshadowing as part of good storytelling, and not to imply that they actually released Discord (otherwise, you'd think the point would have been addressed later in the episodes or have some sort of repercussions for them). I wouldn't think that should have to be explained to people...

^Oh and I forgot to mention, that in fact I always assumed they were fighting *because* Discord's bindings were being weakened, and not the other way around. As the class and CMC were so close to him inside the statue, they were some of the first ponies affected by his presence.

Because the writers haven't made discord yet
