Except that the 'propaganda' (I guess that's what we're calling advertising now) was just a fortunate byproduct of her generosity; only after her original intention to make a single dress ballooned into a huge project all at her personal expense and purley for the love of her friends did she begin to look at it from an intelligent business angle. Clearly a bitch among bitches.

Rarity's never really done anything generous in the entire show other than cutting her own tail off for that water serpent. It was an act of great selflessness which she never did again...

The only other great act of generosity and self sacrifice I've seen on the show was when Spike gave up his fire ruby to make Rarity happy instead of eating it for his own pleasure... Which, ironically, was charmed out of him by Rarity's own self serving greed towards the gem itself.

She certainly loves to take from the little guy until he has nothing for himself. I wish she would be generous to him some day... Even if it was just one time... But I doubt we'll ever see that in an episode because she's Rarity...

Of course you could also say that being greedy is just being generous to yourself which would still make her consistently be the Element of Generosity.

Well, hey, if we're tearing her down anyhow, why give her that? She obviously just gave that tail because of her own desire to see fabulosity fulfilled. There's no such thing as a purely altruistic/selfless act in an ideal sense, because one acts to see their own desires fulfilled. Even an act like giving your life for something is only because either that something is meaningful to you or it's meaningful for you to die regardless of that something - both cases are done to see that self-interest pursued. Right?

Trolling aside, she's simultaneously a greedy pony and the element of generosity. I personally think it's an interesting aspect/conflict of her character, and I think that it was addressed in the Sisterhooves Social. She was made out to be a pony that was unwilling to compromise her standards of cleanliness for her sister, but when inspired to do so, went beyond most expectations and got incredibly dirty - more so than most ponies in the race.

Sigh...
Rarity did like the gem, however all she said was it was beautiful and that she hopes he enjoys it. The scene was a role reversal of the scene in A Dog and Pony Show where she gave Spike a gem.
She also gave Spike a gem encrusted bowtie for being so helpful to Twilight. So yea...
She followed up his gift by showing him genuine warmth and affection, praising him publicly, making capes in his honor, and protecting the gem with her life while harping on about the Dragon who gave it to her and how much it meant to her because of him.
Rarity is actually rather generous, however it is not played up as much because the show needs conflict. Her generosity is shown though, just not incredibly emphasized.
