I can't really knock VLC for what it does, but it's still nothing without a decent codec pack. I really recommend getting your hands on it rather than risk using a video hosting site that promises: "Get the plugin for this media by following this link!".

Really? It's played everything it's ever thrown at it. Maybe you just use really obscure video files?

Do you want to say we have one more reason not to hate Ubuntu?

@Capt:
It's not just for VLC. It works with other standalone players as well. It also works in browsers and it's the best way to keep up with the ever changing ways of .mkv files.

I often tell people if VLC can't play it, it's probably not a media file (or it's corrupted).

I've not run into any issues with it in all the media I've encountered.

The only thing I've ever come across that VLC can't play properly was big .MOV files from final cut pro, but then that's what quicktime player is for...
(alternatively, ffplay, which can just chew through anything)

I'll stick with MPC-HD with SmoothVideo Project. Watching videos in full 60FPS looks nice. :D

Holy shit! It's real. I'm using Ubuntu and looked in the software center. The same pics are there.

I've had VLC since I had Windows and it never gave me any issues. I'm now running Ubuntu 11.10 and I STILL use VLC over other players. Pretty solid program, at least to me, anyhow.
