Windows movie maker would be a good option to use if you want something simple. Now, if you want something a bit more professional, go with Sony Vegas. Using vegas will be a bit difficult to use at first but you will get around it, it's a great software.

You want to use the audio of one trailer with pictures of ponies or use the audio of the trailer and make the animations yourself?

If you just need to merge them go with MovieMaker. Free and simple. Own animations: Adobe Flash. Though I heard CS4 is difficult to crack.

This is fairly simple and you will probably only need one video and one audio track, so there's no reason not to do it in Windows Movie Maker. If you have problems importing the movie, try to convert it to a programm that Windows Movie Maker can work with. You can take the Any Video Converter for that, it's free.

If you want to make more complex videos, simple animations etc, you'll have to invest a little bit of money, because I don't think there are any good free alternatives. I have Magix Video deluxe and I like to work with it, but Sony Vegas is pretty popular as well. I think you can get these programs for around 60€ or whatever currency you use in your region.
For the really fancy stuff, there are the programs from Adobe. But you'll have to sell your car to buy one of those. On the other hand, you could just download a cracked version. I don't think they're expecting anybody to pay their insane prices anyway.
