I am pretty sure the assumption of "she's one of those who didn't understand a thing about Derpy's characterization" is wrong. If anyone who is not familiar with the My Little Pony fandom and "Derpy" (I also do not like that name) just by listening to that voice and mannerism and the name would probably make a layman think that she has the pony equivalent of Down's syndrome. I, too, don't like that they called her "Derpy" for the fact that is something no one in their right mind would name their child, even for a horse/pony, if it honestly meant something as innocent "clumsy". Ditzy Doo (or Doo, or Dew, or whatever) would have been at least sort of endearing, because that would be a cute name for a horse/pony, at least in my opinion. The sad thing is that people who got annoyed that they changed the voice and omitted the name looked at Yamino as a scapegoat to vent their frustrations, and have gone as far as send death threats over Deviant Art and other places. So much for "love and tolerance" from a community who has people that spew so much hate. |

Except Rainbow Dash was the only one that called her Derpy.
Hasbro had a chance to completely recognize, address, and solve every problem with the Derpy drama issue if they had just stood up to it: 1) Rainbow Dash called her Derpy. Rainbow Dash has a history of being a thoughtless dick. 2) A similar clumsy Pegasus was referenced in Winter Wrap Up as "Ditzy Doo" 3) These two points could easily have been combined together that Ditzy Doo is Derpy's ACTUAL name, and Derpy is a nickname Rainbow Dash came up with in her frustration. 4) The show is all about love and tolerance, and this would have been the perfect setup for Rainbow Dash to get a lesson to be more respectful and understanding of Derpy's issues. 5) This all would have resulted in MORE Derpy and her personality for fans to love. Instead Hasbro fled from their balls like a lizard losing its tail when it felt threatened. (except the lizard will grow its tail back eventually) Now we will probably never have a REAL personality for Derpy, and she will forever be relegated to a background pony which, in the eyes of the politically correct, is where the handicapped belong. |
