An interesting new development. I always thought it was a vestigial instinctual desire to let runts die so there's enough milk for the normal babies. Or maybe that's still the case, and the smell serves as the identifier.
What if you were able to apply the smell to a regular baby? |

Reminds me of how ants identify one another. Your class is determined by the scent you give off. Worker ants sprayed with the queen's scent were treated like the queen, and living ants were sprayed with the scent of dead ants and other workers carried them off, still alive. |
