There is no blasted way to tell if that cash would have went toward something useful. Most of those folks probaly would have wasted it on something else or merely horded it. This at the very least adds fire to the capitalist engine.

The worst thing possible would be if the commercial ends up embarrassing all of us. I just hope for all of our sakes that that $14,000 is being well spent, because if it's not then I can only imagine the stupidity that's going to follow when all the non-bronies out there see it...

Should every cent I earn go to others? Are we not entitled to spend on what we please? Slacktavists and their moral pillars piss me off, they stand it shout but never do anything themselves. Could $14,000 really buy 400,000 meals?

Zincy
#1396232

Assuming your average meal, at a cost of roughly 5 dollars (which is a very liberal estimate, the actual cost in transportaion, arrangement, labor, etc). 14k would buy roughly 2800 meals.
Zincy
#1396237
Shipping it out of country ( to say a staving nation) would drive the cost up even higher. Protein rich meal substitutes (which are a full meal, and are shipped to africa in large numbers) cost 25 dollars to make and ship to Africa. 14k would make 560.

6375, I garentee most people here have done more to help then that whiny OP.

I've already explained how the 14k wouldn't go nearly as far as she thinks. Secondly, instead of actively trying to support charities, or give a little herself, she instead opts just to bitch and tell others to do it for her. Thirdly a persons luxury expenditures don't equate to their charitable. I just bought a 60 dollar game 2 days ago with money I earned from my job, 3 days before that i payed for 4 of those Protein rich meal substitutes to be sent to Uganda, my luxury expenditure didn't hamper my ability to give back.

Inb4 tl;dr

Actually, no, that anon wasn't me. OP is right here, folks.

In no way have I ever "bitched" tonight. Too bad text doesn't show tone and facial expressions.
I've been "snarky", but not bitchy, all for a good reason though.

I acknowledge bronies have given a lot, I don't doubt that. I never said this would overshadow us....but this would be, if it succeeds, the first official broadcast to the world. So to ignorant society, it may. It will most likely confuse the heck out of viewers...and strike curiosity in the minds of children who would most likely be oblivious to bronies.

Those numbers were crunched by someone from the FeedtheChildren Charity

"In the U.S. we could help provide 400,000 meals for $14,000.00. I hope this answers your question.

Karolyn Howard
Data/Letters Supervisor
Donor Services
Karolyn.Howard@feedthechildren.org"

Got a problem with her math....talk to her.

I never said I hate bronies, as that would be an absolute and that's a no-no. Too many sub-cultures in this sub-culture to hate 'em all. Plus I'm a brony so that would indeed include me. I just don't want to be represented by this.

I joined those groups on dA ONLY to better spread the publicity.

No, I don't think I can put a stop to this.
However, I do believe I can help change their motives as well as rethinking their script and where the heck the money will go. [the script is your cliche PSA commercial]

The main reason why I posted this everywhere, with a few minor refutations, was to stir the comment board and community and rise awareness. Once this issue is well known, I want to take it to the people organizing this project to show them the flaws in their campaign, and how many agree. This is more impacting than one comment given on the indiegogo comments page.

As for the awareness part, more and more people are realizing how easy it is to convince bronies to throw their money at anything pony related or at anyway to get their names out into the community. Ponies are now being used as a source of publicity. I mean, who's to say that this guy could have easily made a wise $500 investment knowing that the outcome would be like this....MAJOR BANK. How the heck are we sure that this guy has the actual ability to convince the hub to do this. I also note that most of the proceeds are going to extra unneeded airings, instead of charity. They have only put aside $2000 for charity and one line at the end of their new revised script. I want to make the brony community aware of this and that maybe, just maybe, most of these charities/fundraisers might be scams....or just plain failures.

I have no right to govern how people spend their money, but I do have a right to an opinion.

Anyways....I was more of bored than mad...

Brony Thank You Project:
http://www.indiegogo.com/brony

This was their original intention of the project:
http://bronies.lefora.com/2012/05/03/hashing-out-the-draft/

So see for yourself, and forge your own opinion,
help my sculpt mine, as well as solutions that can be taken by this group.

I no butt-hurt...I just think this is silly.

But rants make more people...rant...and ranting is good if you want something to be noticed. Being noticed is easy if you give people something to debate and pick at. Publicity 101

I actually agree with OP more than most of the comments in this thread.

For one, the argument that the money could be spent on worse things does not mean that this is a good use of the money.

Second, even if it's your money, it doesn't mean you should spend it on anything. Remember that this isn't just representing a few bronies. This represents all bronies. If it is done poorly, then that $14,000 will do much more harm than good.

Adding to the second point, Hasbro will screen this probably to check to see if it's FCC compliant. Not to prevent a poor portrayal of bronies. It's being created by amateurs. People who don't get paid and for the most part have little to no training or expertise in this sort of thing. The cliché script should be evidence of that.

Third, being unimportant doesn't mean that a person doesn't have a point. If a five-year old tells you something that is truth or is a valid point, then it's still valid regardless of their age or importance.

Fourth, bronies have done a ton of good in terms of charity before this. Again, tapping into the vein of the first point, it doesn't justify spending it on something which is, more or less, expensive and potentially irresponsible attention seeking. Should the people involved want to embarrass themselves, then that's their right. However, they say they represent all of us.

Fifth, it's not going to be an accurate portrayal of the community. Its goal isn't to be accurate. It's to show us as having some members who don't fit the stereotype that I imagine a large portion of us do fit. I'm simply going by the images of brony meetups and seeing people with black shirts, long and unkempt hair, blue jeans with cheap sneakers, and people who, in all honesty, aren't all that attractive or athletic looking. They look like what I expect bronies to look like. The commercial is giving us a portrayal that most of us probably don't fit. Not all obese, neckbeards, but we look like geeks. We are geeks. There's nothing terrible about that, and there's no need to try to pretend like we're not.

I just scanned through the comments, and I think I hit on most of the arguments for the commercial. But to be fair, I'll add some arguments against OP.

DHX won't directly receive money from this. However, Hasbro will. Money talks for Hasbro, as they are a successful and large business. We don't buy a ton of official merchandise, but giving Hasbro $12-14,000 (as the rest is going to charity) is a showing of how committed we are to the show. It may be a point of evidence for them that we really do enjoy the show and how it's being put together by DHX. It may help FiM continue until it hits its natural-feeling end and not being cancelled before DHX has a chance to wrap it up as they see fit (because I imagine that they'll want to move on and focus on other music/animation/directing/voice gigs/etc. at some point in their careers.) I believe one of the animators said that specifically a while ago, and that's well within their rights.

And they have been responsive to some of the concerns people have had. The script has changed fairly significantly, so there may be a chance that it isn't damning to the community, at least. A little embarrassing is kind of a given. We are mostly males who watch a show for little girls. Comes with the territory.

I don't really think that kind of money should be put towards a commercial... I mean, I grew up pretty poor and I'm still not in a great spot financially, and that just seems....like a lot of money for just 10 to 30 seconds.

I would rather the money be donated to charity or something that would actually go to the show or companies involved with the show.

But people are entitled to do what they'd like with their money.

After reading that reddit thread this honestly isn't needed it has good intentions but the details are where it fails apart. This comes off as overly obsessive which is something the fandom should try and avoid
