Arwen sacrificed her immortality so she could get all withered and worm-eaten like her beau.

also, Arwen stopped being immortal when her dad left middle-earth due to only being a half-elf. Cadance has no such option - she's going to outlive him, no matter what.

Maybe there's no male alicorns?
Also, imagine what a marriage would be like after a couple hundred or thousand years. It's either going to be really good or really, really really bad.

Even immortals like to have relationships. The fact that they'll all die eventually is something you learn to accept after a few centuries.

Celestia and Luna are Alicorns. They are basically immortal, and are a mix of Unicorns, Pegasi and Earth Ponies.

Cadence is a Winged Unicorn, which is only a mix of the first two, and is not immortal. Twilight even calls her a Unicorn in the episode, and I quote: "How many Unicorns can just spread love wherever they go? I only know of one! And you're marrying her!"

So yeah, Cadance =/= Alicorn. She's a Unicorn with wings, the actual show proves this.

Eternity can be a loneny existance
and being so, even the gods can fall into despair as eons may seem like nothing to them.
so they choose to form bonds with mortals to at least have (what to them is) some brief momments of happines, it also comes with the knowledge that their mates will eventually die, but they accept it and enjoy all the more those brief decades they have togheter, for they are well aware what true loneliness is....

...also i'm more of a fan of a "Cadance has a regular pony lifespan" theory, so there, whoever dies the second will eventually join it's mate on the afterlife

They never used the term alicorn in the show ever.
She is an ageless alicorn like Celestia & luna.
Deal with it.

Not really. The princesses are referred to as unicorns in first ep. The actual word alicorn isn't used in the show, they are categorised as a subset of unicorns.

"They never used the term alicorn in the show ever, which is why she's an alicorn."

Ladies and Gents, Jack-o's logic at its finest. Could you go on to explain how this proves the actual quote from the show wrong?

Fair enough, but if we're still talking about Cadance's immortality, consider the following:

Celestia hasn't aged a day since Granny Smith's flashback in the Zap Apple ep, set many years in the past. Cadance looked noteably younger in Twiilight's flashback when she was a filly, much fewer years in difference the Granny Smith's.

With this comparison, it's proven that Celestia doesn't age (over thousand of years, apparently) and Cadance does (over the course of one lttle pony's foalhood). It's logical to assume that Cadance isn't immortal.
Jack-o-Lantern

My point still stands that she is no different from Celestia cause only the fandom assumed that Celestia & Luna were gods then S2 finale came and canon disproved fanon.
Scumbag_Crowley

@Jack
I've never assumed that. I've shown that Celly's immortal to the point of being ageless, but I've known she's not god-like ever since Nightmare Moon captured her or whatever in the very first FiM episode ever! All I'm saying is Celestia and Cadance are different, as the show has proved to us:

Cadance does age; proven by canon.
Celestia does not age; proven by canon.

Maybe because Cadance is Celestia's niece, and the immortality gene doesn't pass down through her children, but nevertheless my point still stands; Cadance ain't immortal. She ages. She will die one day.

Maybe alicorns just age into adulthood then stop aging from there?

Okay, we may not think Celestia is a goddess, but the ponies seem to see her as some sort of divine being, as shown in "Sisterhooves Social" when Rarity declares "With Celestia as my witness, I shall never be sisterless again!"

If they did, bearing in mind Cadance is her niece, and therefore reproduction is possible, wouldn't we be seeing alicorns everywhere from thousands of years worth of breeding and no age-death?
Jack-o-Lantern
#1382754
@Scumbag
Because maybe they are somewhere else thats off camera just like with stallions in the show?
maybe they don't reproduce that much?
Maybe most alicorns live on thier home planet (or whatever your headcanon says they are from)?
Or maybe most alicorns died in The Last Great Time War?
Or maybe Hasbro wants more alicorns and they call all the shot and not Faust?

I think like 977, she obviouly grow like the normal ponies as we can see in the flashback. Plus if there was such thing as an immortal alicorn race, equestria would be filled with alicorn since their population could just go larger.

what if alicorns aren't born through such means like even if alicorns mated and became pregnant they wouldn't have an alicorn child

I'm not very inform of the mythology but the greek titans wasn't immotal for what i know. They were vainquish by Zeus i think.

And alicorn aren't godlike for what i think Celestia, Luna and Cadence were all vainquish somewhere.

CottonTales

No great power does not come with immortality the vice versa is also true you don't have to be extremely powerful to be immortal but most people just think that long lived powerful things are immortal
Anonymous

So alicorn don't have to be immortal to reflect the power we think they have.

And we also don't know Celestia and luna are immortal due to their alicorn nature or something that happend to them.

Alicorn vs. Winged Unicorns.
My head canon:
Celestia is Alicorn
Luna is Alicorn
Cadence is Winged Unicorn and will live no longer than Shining Armor
But that is just the in my head canon, you are free to think what ever you want untill the show says otherwise.

I actually developed a whole headcanon about Alicorns after the season finalle, for short:

There are twelve Alicorns, each representing one of of the twelve Olimpians of Greek mythology, out of those 12, only 3 are immortal, because they need to be(Celestia and Luna, representing the sun and the moon, Apollo and Artemis, and a 3rd, male Alicorn that represents Hades of the lot, he can't die because he is death), the other 9 reincarnate and die trough the generations, much in a Avatar style, Cadance for example, is the goddess of love, representing Aphrodite, she will live and die when her time comes, but her essence will separate from her soul and will reincarnate in another alicorn.

Of course, it means we would have another 9 Alicorns to meet, one of which the censorship wouldn't allow into the show(hint: the Hades one), but hey, at least it makes sense to me.

I realize "Hades is the god of death" is a misconception, Thanatos is the god of death, Hades is the god of the dead, of the underworld, but I said "based on greek myth", not "100% accurate to the greek myths".
