Because it creates an opportunity for fans of the opposite gender to like a character as much as the other gender likes them without resorting to homosexuality?
That's just my guess. Pretty sure there's a lot more reasons out there. |

Many of these are based off a very good fan fic called 'On a Cross and Arrow'. I would assume that much of the popularity comes from fans of that work.
