The problem I have is the color palate and the name. I came up with what I thought was cool, but it turned out to be a fat male unicorn version of Daring Doo. I know that in the show they sometimes repeat color schemes, but an OC should try to avoid that. |

Pick non-existing colors. Good luck with that one.
Or draw a circle. Imagine how cool a circle would be among ponies! Use natural colors. Make a mottled coat pattern. Rasta mane. Ancient symbol for cutie mark. ^Not all of them on one pony. Whatever you do, you will realize that your oc has been made. A bit later you will realize that it still sucks. So far I've seen only three (or so) good OC's. Surprisingly they have personality too. |

The reason why so many OC stories suck is that if you're a writer and want to write a story you actually don't need any additional characters. Especially on a show like FIM where a lot of characters can be interpreted in many ways. So a lot of people think that adding an OC will cover up their bad writing skills, which it doesn't.
And then there are of course the whole Mary Sue/Self insersts etc. |

I have the most problem choosing a cutie mark. I pick a kite for my first one, and he was a unicorn, so I made him as a the guy who makes/holds sky diving/parachuting/kite flying competitions and events. He would build small contraptions to help flightless ponies glide to even fly around a little bit so they can see what it's like. Didn't turn out so well. |
