I can't help but wonder where these numbers for Stalin's death toll keep coming from. I mean, one of the most respected scholars in Soviet History, Robert Conquest, a British tory who was no friend to Stalin at all, put an upper bound of 20 million dead from the collectivizations and purges.
When balanced against the 35 million Soviet soldiers and civilians who died fighting the Nazis, and the Nazi plans totally exterminate all slavic peoples, it's pretty clear who the lesser evil is. That's simply false. Famine affected all of the agricultural regions of the Soviet Union. Ukraine wasn't "cordoned off": it was a center of Soviet industry. Cordoning it off would have been impossible. The brutality of Stalin's regime is actually more horrifying than Nazi brutality because there was a perverse utilitarian sense to it. Which is why I would say that the Stalinists were more degenerate than Nazis: it was brutality that served a higher interest, as opposed to killing based on hate and xenophobia. |
