Because that's what the raging "defenders" really want; they don't care about Derpy, they hate her because she represents caring about the feelings of others. As a person with a disability, I'm personally offended that such an endearing character was essentially censored because of their apparent disability. Being a stereotype doesn't automatically make a character offensive. Derpy isn't portrayed as being a bad pony because of her stereotyped disability; just like Applejack isn't bad just because she's a redneck, Rainbow Dash isn't bad just because she's a stereotypical butch, Twilight Sparkle isn't bad just because she's a stereotypical nerd, etc. If they really want to address Derpygate in a positive way, they'd leave her as is and have her star in an episode in which the mane 6 come to her defense when she's bullied for her mental handicap. |

The problem is, she is portrayed as being a bad pony because of her disability. It isn't just that she's klutzy, scatterbrained, cross-eyed, or otherwise a stereotype. It's that she's so incompetent that she can't even perform basic tasks, and destroyed an entire building out of sheer stupidity. Even the parts that didn't make sense (like when she broke the floor by sitting on it) were still portrayed as her fault. And no one has been shown to like or respect her; all she got Rainbow Dash yelling about how annoying and stupid she is, and it's made to look like Dash is in the right. Basically the whole joke of the scene was "look at how stupid and worthless this person is". There's nothing wrong with Derpy Hooves as a character, but her portrayal in that episode was one of the worst, not only of Derpy herself, but of charcters in general on the show, or of the "loveably klutzy" archetype in any media. |
