^for one thing, it gives even more lease for people to make mary-sue OCs, and because she was originally planned to be a unicorn but she got changed for no good reason.
And also Faust said that there were only ever supposed to be two alicorns. Mainly the first two points, though. |

I'm of the opinion that alicorns aren't an exclusive race of beings with god-like power. Celestia and Luna are, and just happen to take the forms of alicorns. |

Celestia doesn't need wings either. Has she flown anywhere? And besides, the show has never said the words alicorn. Ever. Even in the intro to the first episode (skip to 0:42), they say unicorns. Never once did they ever say alicorns. The fanon made them into "gods," not the canon. |

From the wiki: Princess Cadance is a Pegasus unicorn pony who is first featured in A Canterlot Wedding, alongside Shining Armor, her husband-to-be. She was a foal-sitter of Twilight Sparkle as shown in a flashback. A New York Times ad states she is the niece of Princess Celestia.
On the other hand: Princess Celestia is a Pegasus unicorn and the co-ruler of Equestria with her sister Princess Luna, both of whom are responsible for raising the sun and the moon and stars. She is the mentor of Twilight Sparkle, whom she addresses as her faithful student. She is a recurring character in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. So, I don't see why people keep saying alicorn everywhere. |
