Eating hay and/or grass seems like something that they avoid eating unless absolutely necessary.
We'll get no confirmation of this until we see a pony complain about how they're starving, in the middle of an open field of grass. |

Way I see it, ponies with grass from the ground are like humans with meat from an animal they just hunted:
Possible to eat uncooked or non-processed, but your body isn't meant to handle it well. |
