Didn't anyone learn anything about FiM dragons in the two episodes about them? The older/bigger a dragon gets, the dumber and less mature they get.
Teen dragons are less mature than Spike and Greed Spike is a jerk that talks in hulk speak then loses the ability to talk completely. So her little Spikey-Wikey is perfect the way he is right now. |

I personally suspect this pairing is so popular because it's a reflection of the predominately young male fanbase. Insofar as, male fans who have had to deal with being rejected by woman/girls they've crushed hard on, root for Spike to win Rarity's heart despite the odds stacked against him since, in a sense, he represents them and they can't stand to see him fail. |
