Well considering one "ruined" example is simply sympathetic/cute fanart, whereas the other is a complete raping, reversal, and overly romantic remake of an entire genre, I'd say you're comparing apples to Eldritch monstrosities. But then again, I'm usually wrong to some degree.

Hey, even bad guys are cute as little kids. Just because she is a sadistic cunt doesn't mean she wasn't a sweet little-

Wait, she dreamed of the subjugation and destruction of an entire country since she was a nymph.

...Still cute, though!

See, here's the difference. Even if Chrysalis is supposed an evil monster and it's what made her such a great villain, her cute pics are just outright adorable that it's hard to hate. Edward Cullen...is a sparkly faggot.

The destruction of vampires isn't even what made those books horrible, by the way. The worst part is that it romanticizes an abusive relationship and makes it out to be "cool" and "mainstream". Meyer is a stupid cunt.

I'm all for cute little Chrysalis, it's the woobification that bugs me. She flat-out stated she dreamed of razing Canterlot and feeding on its people since she was little, she's basically evil straight out of the egg. How do you sympathize with a character that has had that kind of dark ambition since such a young and tender age?

But she is pretty fucking adorable. I'd risk disembowelment for a chance to hug that little critter.

It's our nature to be drawn towards the seemingly irredeemable that has the veneer of attraction and sympathy. Like a lamp-fish that dangles it's bait before your eyes only to consume you whole. It is sometimes our pity that makes us pitiable.
DhanaRagnarok

Well, she's evil and most likely irredeemable, but since they feed on love it's not impossible that one's love for her would be a great (and reliable) source of power.
Now, I think it would land you more as her pet than her lover, but hey, at least she would probably be nicer with you. Barely nice, but nicer.
Impious

I'll admit though, I do pity the nature of her existence. She probably doesn't know what real love actually feels like, and even if she were to be loved for herself rather than for the guise she wears, the act of loving her would still slowly kill her lover. That's a terrible way to live, to move from one mask to another and never be allowed to know compassion.

She's still a monster though.

it's tragic only from an human point of view, with human values

who ever started with the idea of comparing them to humans?
if you try to humanize them yes, they are pitable; but if you don't, they're simply alien minded (but succubusses are more cool and widely known than faes)

@Impious: Nice to see someone see things as I do. I think they're more tragic than evil.
At one point or another you've got to stop seeing the ones you feed on as people and merely as food supplies, or you simply go insane.
I mean, when your very nature is to be a parasite, with a quite repulsive look AND the ability to steals one's "normal" look, you don't have much choice over how to behave. ESPECIALLY when you're the Queen of your people and they need you.

And yet it's quite likely some weren't evil, or didn't want to become evil, but they either died or submitted.

...Wow, these guys' life must SUCK.

430: Well thought out but It's also up for debate if having your feelings of Love fed off of by a Changeling kills the Victim: Or does the feeling actually become drained to point where they can no longer feel the Love they had? A Fate worse then Death as well as having some really Sad potential implications for Cadence and Shining Armor. Part of the appeal also lies in what Anon points out in 383: What if it were possible for Chrysalis to learn how to receive Love normally rather than using deceit and conquest? Probably not something She is capable of but it's an appealing idea for multiple reasons.

Well, Shining Armor's headaches grew more and more severe the more he hung around with Not!Cadence, so I'm guessing at the very least it has very adverse health effects. A year or two? Yeah, I'm sure they kill their prey. At the very least, the pony might finally lose it and off themselves from the pain.

573: Keep in mind though, She wasn't just feeding off of his Love; She was also putting him in a Mind-controlled State and his Barrier Spell was under constant attack. Messing around with a Unicorn's Magic capabilities has already been hinted at as being something highly debilitating for the Victim. It does show that Shining Armor is actually a lot tougher than He might appear to be as well.

@#1353500: This is actually a very good point. Too many fans assume that just because the changelings can talk, it means that they have a humanized thought process like the ponies do. They clearly do not, however.

The "always chaotic evil" trope is pretty common in fantasy and science fiction, so I'm surprised to see so many bronies denying such an overt use of it in this show.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AlwaysChaoticEvil

The always chaotic evil cannot be reasoned or pleaded with, because that is not how they are wired. They are literally a nasty species of monster that just so happens to be intelligent enough to talk. Chrysalis herself was most powerful than Celestia and highly intelligent, but her minions are for the most part mindless, insect-like drones. These are the "orcs" of the MLP universe-- the antithesis of everything the ponies represent. There's no redemption to be had there, because her species is not wired for the "repent and forgive" system the way ours (and by extension, the ponies) is. They believe in taking, and damn anything that gets in their way.

If termites could talk, I doubt we could talk them out of eating our houses.

@#1354020

They didn't seem all too mindless, just identical in appearance for the most part with a few exceptions.

The royal guard are the same way and we don't call them Celestia's mindless drone army do we?

Well not very often at least.

bboifatz
#1354397

@284: It's a common theory that Celestia and Luna use magic to make their guards have a uniform appearance (i.e. all of Celestia's Pegasi have blue hair and blue eyes). That's a bit different from the Changelings, who all have the same appearance by default unless they use magic.

Changelings are clearly not on the same level of intelligence as ponies-- they are more aggresive, but rely on overwhelming numbers to fight as opposed to physical prowess (much like the Orcs in Lord of the Rings, who are physically weaker and less coordinated than humans, elves, and dwarves, but reproduce much faster and are inherently violent).

Anonymous
#1354915

This picture is stupid. I would d'aaw at a chibi Count Orlock, but not an über fetish fuel in name only vampire. The shift in monsters from monstrous to sympathetic and/or cute is inevitable. The problem with Twilight is horrible writing and a warped morality. Vampires don't sparkle, but i'd be lenient if the stories were good.

On the point of making monsters sympathetic, normally I'd be on OP's side, but I enjoy the rather meta theory that Chrysalis can feed on the love of her fans.

@Anon #1354020

I don't think there is enough evidence to imply always chaotic evil, but seeing as their species feeds on love i thinks a bit of Blue and Orange morality is in play when it comes to the species as a whole.

Morality is different to different cultures, let alone species. Comparisons to Orcs are interesting as Orcs aren't always chaotic evil in fantasy any more. In Tolkien's Legendarium? yes. In the Elder Scrolls? Nope.

I agree with OP. I am surprised at the sheer hypocrisy displayed by the fandom. I think it's because Chrysalis is a chick and the notion that all bad girls are actually good little doormats on the inside with a tough outer shell. And all the manly men here will woo her and break her out of the shell to reveal the woobie inside. Makes me sick.

No wonder Fluttershy is so popular. You people LOVE doormats because they are so easy to manipulate.
