Ha! Now you're just pulling my leg! A man, victim of domestic abuse, bitch please! |

Well, be fair. It was a pretty adequate explanation to something Twilight had NO hard evidence for.
And it made that scene about as awkward as the Bridal-Shower freakout scene in "Bridesmaids". Of course, pretty much ALL subtlety about Cadance being an imposter was gone after her first scene if you were paying attention, so you still knew Twilight was right. |

Joke or not this doesn't even make any sense |

Twilight is an expert in magic. I think she was smart enough to tell the difference between a healing spell and a mind alteration spell, especially since they were having a nasty fight that fake!Cadence was the agressor in, and her spell made Shining Armor shut up.
Unfortunately, everyone ganged up on Twilight because she confronted Cadance in public, in front of a bunch of ponies who already thought that Twilight was behaving irrationally. Chrysalis succeeded in making Twilight's friends doubt her, and then made Twilight doubt herself. |

Maybe everyone will listen to her next time?
Jk, Jk. Her friends will never learn. |

Maybe Twilight should have just confronted Cadance in private? |

She would have gotten somewhere if She had just insisted that She knew something was wrong with Cadence. Then again, it's kind of a Plot-Hole in the episode that She was the only one who apparently noticed. |

Ooooh, I get it now. I was confused at first and thought this was about what Shining Armor believed, but Shining Armor is the domestic abuse victim being referred to here.
This is basically referring to how domestic abuse victims will typically be the first ones to cover for the abuse and try to explain it away as anything but the abuse it is. Effectively Shining Armor is playing that role to a T. the only reason that this joke doesn't work is that no matter how well you might now this tendency, the natural instinct is still to believe that person unless their story has a particularly obvious whole or conflict against observed evidence. |

@marioandsonic: That would have presented a different problem, though-- Cadence would probably have overpowered Twilight and either tried to mind control her, or put her into to pit ahead of schedule. Then again though, she only overpowered Twilight after she had broken her will (with the unwitting help of Shining Armor) and got her to lower her guard.
Maybe if Not!Cadance had attacked Twilight, and Twilight managed to escape, her friends would have been more apt to believe her. Shining Armor was able to explain away all the bad stuff Twilight had seen her do, but if Twilight accused her of literally hurling bolts of energy at her, that goes well beyond the point of viewing something harmless through a possessive lens. Her friends could believe that her mind would distort the facts, but it would probably take a lot more than Cadance's word against Twilight's to convince them that Twilight was outright lying about Cadance physically harming her. |

Twilight Sparkle is the One Sane Pony in her episodes--so much weirdness goes on around her, that even when she's right no one believes her. |
