Faust said that Celestia and Luna are the only ones of their kind. My take is that Cadence fails the "earth pony" requirement to be an alicorn. Also, the "divinity" requirement. |

I think she is a Winged Unicorn.
It seems like many unicorns have a special talent that shapes their cutie mark, but also defines their magic talent. I think Candence's special talent is showing love to others, she showed love by foal sitting, and thus has special magical talent with love also, like the spells she uses in the episode. I don't think she is a Alicorn, as she seems to be of normal pony age. that's just my head canon tho, your free to think what ever you want,.really. |

My personal headcanon: Alicorns are almost never born, but rather "made" through a kind of magical genetic manipulation. The reason that no males thus far have become Alicorns is simple: as males have one Y chromosome when it "should" be an X, they could be regarded as "missing" a quarter of a chromosome's worth of DNA.
In this DNA is found the code for the potential of Alicorn mutation. |

There is actually a little fan theory made up in a stupid fanfic that could make "sense" if someone is willing to accept a more "grimdark" explanation: Cadence actually is just a unicorn (after all, even Twilight refers to her just as one when she tells Shining Armor about how she is the most awesome ... in all of Equestria) but her mother was pregnant with twins. Cadence was one (a unicorn) the other one was a pegasus, but then the Cadence fetus absorbed the brother and the wings are sort of biological remains. To add "horror" to it, that also happens for real in nature even if rarely. |

her wings are obviusly the result of a executive meddling, think about it, the whole episode would had been the same without them (that scene where she flies could be easily edited), and also, if she was just an unicorn, all that hate she had may never had existed. |

The term alicorn refers to a unicorn's horn. A unicorn with wings is properly called a winged unicorn. So when Twilight refers to Cadence as a unicorn, and even in the first episode when Celestia and Luna are called unicorn sisters, it's correct. Nowhere in the show is it said that winged unicorns are an equal mix of the three pony races; that's just fan speculation. |
