Maybe it's a cumulative thing? After after thousands of years he would have been able to absorb a lot of chaotic energy, then the CMC comes along and throws the last straw on the camel's back. |

Both Luna AND Celestia used the elements to defeat him, the seal would have been very powerful. IT certainly would have taken a thousand years of gradual weakening to life it, rather than just the CMC having a little fight doing the trick in one swing. If that were the case, he would have broken out probably within a few years. |
