In my headcanon, Shining Armor's magic is on the same scale as Twilight's, but he can only cast defensive spells; barriers and the like.

Twilight's talent is magic, so she can learn pretty much any spell-- however, her proficiency at said spells might not be as good as unicorns that specialize in them. i.e., she can copy Rairty's gem finding spell or Shining Armor's forcefield spell, but her versions aren't as strong. And then of course, there's her own spells like un-discording and her off-the-charts telekinesis that really set her apart in terms of her magical talents.

This isn't necessarily an indication that Shining Armor is more powerful than Twilight. It simply means that Twilight hasn't needed to put a shield around anything larger than her house, so we won't know how her shield matches up to her brother's until we see her try.

Speaking of her brother, defensive spells appear to be his talent (or at least, we haven't seen him do others), so he probably specializes in then while Twilight is more of a jack of all trades.

This also brings up the question of power comparisons re: Twilight, Shining Armor, and Cadence. How do they compare to each other, power-wise? Cadence didn't seem that powerful from what we've seen (none of the near-godhood of Luna and Celestia, anyway). In fact, Twilight seems to be more powerful than she is. Celestia's comment about Twilight's power potential back during her testing seems to imply that Twilight is also more powerful than her brother. I mean, wouldn't Celestia already be aware of Shining Armor's magic, since he probably took the test long before his sister did? Twilight Sparkle may still be the third most powerful pony magic-wise, even with the addition of Cadence and Shining Armor.

I forget the terminology, but would she be a red mage? She seems like she can learn any spell.

Putting Shields is Shining Armor's special talent.Just like Rarity's speciality is to fond gems.

It should not be strange that he excels in that.

Can he teleport? can undiscord things? can he go back in time?

I don't think so.

@Azarias:

Twilight's talent is magic,so I suppose she could be something like that.

@605 Red Mages can only learn Black and White magic to a certain level. It'd be better to say Twilight is a Sage since she can cast all levels of magic. Her proficiency is yet to be seen though.

@majob Okay, I haven't played an FF besides 7, Tactics and like 30 seconds of 9.

So my knowledge of the classes is very very limited.

Twilight had no need to stop a changeling invasion, she just wanted to keep 3 bothersome fillies away. Wait for season 3 when twilight is gonna make the anti-Pinkie forcefield. Even Celestia will be amazed by such power.

@797: You seemed to sum it all up perfectly. Yeah, this episode took a wrecking ball to the "All Alicorns = godliek" fanon, but it at least preserved Twilight Sparkle's status as Equestria's #3 magic caster. I think that's good, since I think her role would be sold short if they started introducing more ponies who are more powerful than her.

Shining Armor is stronger than Twilight because he is older, at least on my headcannon.

Age helps and Shining Armor is trained with the royal guard. Also let us not forget this, just like any soldier in the real world a normal soldier is more capable to push themselves past the limit.

Marines, Army Rangers and Seals are trained to push just past their limit, work together and fight. Shining armor does just that.

Twilight is a Mage but she's never been pushed past her limit as often as a trained soldier. Sure she was pushing herself against the Ursa Minor but she usually doesn't show off her max. She learned from Trixie, dat smexy unicorn.

>Cadence didn't seem that powerful from what we've seen (none of the near-godhood of Luna and Celestia, anyway).

Nightmare Moon's the only winged unicorn that's shown any significant magic, and it was mostly shapeshifting and/or illusion.

^ Luna can do the same, as well as what appears to be large-scale weather control (see Nightmare Night). Raising the sun and moon isn't small beans either.

Also, you seem to be forgetting Celestia teleporting straight from Canterlot and nullifying Twilight's out of control want it need it spell (Lesson Zero).

Twilight did not need to put a shield over a whole town. She only wanted her library protected. Hell if she wanted, being the element of magic and all that, she could probably shield most of Equestria just by herself.

@Azarias Twilight would be a Blue Mage variation in FF terms. She learns spells by observation.

Twilight mentioned that only Shining Armor could protect Canterlot like that, but I don't think it's just a matter of raw power. Her wording implied that Celestia wouldn't be able to do that either.

I think that Shining Armor's superior ability with that spell is a combination of it being his special spell, which he's specialized in for most of his life, and being powerful enough that the more generalized Twilight can't just use brute force to make up the difference. Another possibility is that Shining concentrated on learning how to make his shield as wide and strong as possible. Twilight's variation only activated to block the CMC, which implies a higher level of selectivity.

Thanks for typing that out Sjogre, save me a lot of time. But as for the higher level of selectivity, Shining Armors possessed that as well, albeit in reverse. Notice how it allowed the train through, as well as the Mane cast. It also automatically opened for Luna reentering, despite Shining Armor not watching for Luna coming in at the time (at least from what I could tell).

In short, Twilight's was more selective exclusion, while Shining's was selective as to what could enter.

Hmmn. Selective inclusion versus selective exclusion.

I'm not sure how automatic the passage through Shining's spell is. When the Mane Six came in by train, it had to come to a complete stop and then the guards seemed to do something. Maybe certain ponies were given some kind of passkey for the shield?

My own little headcanon is that after Twilight started learning magic she used her knowledge to help Shining refine and improve his spell.

... blue mage? she learns spells seemingly after viewing them used/ taught once by somepony else, and her spells are so random and diverse, they don't really fit a catch-all classification like "offense" or "defense".

I think the shield thing could be an inherent(sp?) skill for House Sparkle.

(inb4 Kekkei Genkai get it out now because further down the road it'll only end in flames.)
