How would Derpy be a good companion? I know it's late but she's kinda useless. I can see her on one episode but that's it. |

She can fly for starters ... and it's not about being useful to the Doctor.
If it's only about what skills they can bring to the table you would have to disqualify a lot of the Doctors companions. |

^^
She is always happy. I don't know what else she needs to be to be a good companion. |

Well she tries her best and her heart is in the right place. Plus flight, super strength, indestructible body parts, size altering powers, space folding, duplicates, multidimensional vision, age changing, and probably some other stuff. |

The Doctor tends to have an ego problem sometimes. He always needs to have somebody with far less intelligence than him so that he can make himself feel even smarter whenever he does something clever and is praised for it. Not to say that is his only reason behind choosing a companion, but it is a less than admirable factor. Mostly what he looks for in a companion is a thirst for adventure like himself. He also aims for people that are less than likely to be of any importance. Total nobodies who nobody will expect to be somebodies. Somebody that is much like himself. An outcast no matter where he goes. Be it Earth, space, or his own home world. The Doctor is just lonely and needs a friend when it comes down to it. Atleast, that is my take on it. It could just be that he can't resist her bubbly, cross-eyed cuteness. |
