well nearly all nursery rhymes and storys come from dark beginnings so ye, MAYBE! |

I thought the notion that Ring around the Rosie being about the plague was just an urban legend. |
| ED-SKaR #1321956 2 months ago |
@ Yorec: Ring around the roses, or Ring around Rosie was 100% about the black plague.
Thinking about this some more, it actually kinda makes some sense, except that the explanation does not fit. Ladybirds are not carrion bugs at all. and why say "clap your hooves" if that would just spread the disease further? Why not "Don't clap your hooves" Of course that could have changed over time... |

That could very easily be about any number of other things.
Probably about spring. |

The disease caused oozing and seeping of the pores, meaning that most ponies had to lay in the sunlight to dry their pus-soaked skin.
(Sunshine, sunshine) The ooze also smelled of rot, attracting insects wherever the ponies went (Ladybugs awake) Ponies had to stamp and shake constantly to prevent the bugs from clinging to them so as to prevent their sores from becoming irritated (clap your hooves and give a little shake) Also, Twilight and Cadence both crouched in the dance, alluding to the disease weakening of muscles, notably leg muscles, forcing ponies to their knees. |

Ring around the rosie, pocket full 'o posey,
ashes, ashes, we all fall down! |
| ED-SKaR #1323022 2 months ago |
Jackarunda: In England, where the poem originates, it goes:
Ring a Ring a roses A pocket full of posies Atishoo atishoo We all fall down. Also note the English "ladybird" rather than the Yankish "ladybug" So yea, OP is English. |

Or possibly Welsh, apparently Scots have a different version. |

I don't usually find grimdark funny.
But when I do, it's written by GCoL. |
