As an older brother, I never looked at my siblings as my "friends". They are the people you are born with, so your going to have to interact with each other eventually.

This still works though. Bear with me.
What I'm thinking happened was that without Shining there with at school with her (bear in mind that he probably started his Royal Guard training some point after she left. He might not have even been in Canterlot for a few years.) Twi would have become more afraid without anypony who would stand up for her, even if there weren't bullies around (and this is Twi we're talking about. Even as a filly I wouldn't put it past her to overreact). Fast-forward 10+ years where Twilight is now a reclusive shut-in, having long since forgotten the importance of having friends, due to using books and studying to shut herself out from the world. See? That still made sense. |

As a big brother, I can understand Shining, you don't want your sister/brother to be dependant of you, they should grow by their own at some point, have their mistakes and that.
As one biggest one in a family of three siblings, it depends in most of them their growth. But you can help them when they're in some kind of struggle.. But befriending a brother... It pretty depends of both sides, one can be as nice and courteous with it's brother, but if the other refuses or doesn't like you, well.. Not much you can do. @Draconequus. Point said, it can be good or bad, but believe me, some people wishes they could be alone, it has it's advantages and flaws, so don't worry, you're not alone |
