Lium, it was someone asking Faust if Discord was behind it, she said that at that point she had no say in the shows canon anymore but thought it was an interesting idea, so not canon at all. |

This Classy individual believed that it was obvious that Nightmare Moon was merely Luna going haywire, forcing Celestia to lock her in the moon until a way to bring her back from her state was available. Was it not claimed previously in Return of Harmony that they defeated Discord together, claiming Equestria from his reign of terror?
I had no idea Discord had long-range mental powers from being imprisoned in stone to force Luna into madness. Truly, a most formidable opponent... I say! |

@Classy: 2 theories. ASSUMING Hasbro goes the Discord route to explain NMM.
1) Discord was subtly affecting Luna despite being petrified, just like how he affected the CMC into arguing at the start. 2) Before his banishment, Discord probably put doubts into Luna's mind. Doubts which fed on her desire and jealousy and eventually caused her to turn into NMM. |

It is possible that while Nightmare Moon was not a spirit that possessed Luna, it is the remains of the darkness that was inside of Luna. It's not illogical to think that such a being could possess someone. |

@998: Actually this possession theory has been going on for a long time, and is very popular. I guess it stems from a misunderstanding of Lauren's original words, a desire to see NMM make a return in some form, and/or lastly to have Luna being innocent and kind all along. |

@FireEel: Both are fair enough assumptions. However, if Discord had the power to influence the CMCs, then why did he not do it with others, previously? If escaping his prison was something so simple for him, then surely he could have escaped much sooner than when he actually did. Luna, like any other character in this show, is prone to emotions and sadness. It is unknown for how long exactly did she resent the fact no one enjoyed the beauty of her night, and eventually flipped the table in frustration. It happens with the best of us, does it not? Claiming Luna was innocent all along is wishfu thinking, but... 'Tis my own opinion, no less. |

I think ken already had darkness inside him because of his brother,the dark spores only made that grow stronger and bigger. Like luna,her hate grew up and turned into darkness,so she became nightmare moon,i think they both kinda did that by their own,not because of someone else. |

Well, even still, it's symbolic. Sure, yeah, there's no excuse for what she did, but her emotions were so out of control that she wasn't able to control said dark magic. Hence, letting the devil in. Power corrupts, and it got to the point where she was basically a completely different entity. |
