Its makes her less evil, more amoral. Their driven by instinct, the need to feed. Doesn't mean she can't still be evil, she is a "Dark Queen" style character. But her evil doesn't come from their will to feed, but from her desire for conquest. She wants to feed her people, which is sympathetic, but she also wants to build an empire. |

The key is motivation. You provide a sympathetic motivation that explains, but doesn't justify, her actions. People symp with the cause, not the character. Its sympthy via proxy. |

Since you clearly know tropes. I would take her the with a little Knight-Templar/ Well intentioned Extremest. However, I would also keep her chess-master qualities and sadism. She wants to feed her young, but why not have some fun while doing it and build an empire to boot. |

She's around the grey area, but mostly black morality. She's just trying to feed her people, a noble enough goal, but the methods she employs, even going by the episode alone, are morally black. Kidnapping, mind control, subterfuge, near regicide, and generally just destroying the happiness of others, all without remorse. |

I will have to alter things... Their feeding puzzles me a bit. How could their entire race swap places and feed, if no one loves a conquer and everyone is distrustful now that their under her rule. My theory is that they can feed on other emotions to, like hate and anger. Making them true emotion-eaters is the only way I can make a conquest situation make sense. |

Do they bleed the love of their prey dry until they become emotionally barren husks, or do they bask in their prey's love like radiation and feed with a form of synthesis? In that case, they'd be well fed until their prey died of old age. Otherwise, they'd constantly be moving from place to place like locusts. |

Well, it's horrifying to consider that the Changelings might have entire populations under a mind-fucking reality-altering spell. Their prey might not know any better, and legitimately all believe that nothing is out of the ordinary. When in reality, their "loved ones" are all shapeshifting abominations slowly devouring their emotions and ability to feel.
That's utterly horrifying, that there are swarms of predators out there that are virtually invisible and feed upon your positive emotions without you knowing. Your best friends, your family, your wife, they could actually be eating you and not giving a fuck about what happens to you. Nightmare fuel of the highest octane. God I love these guys. |

^Thing is she would still be a heartless bitch...to ponies. She don't care bout them past being a foodsource, that's where the major awesome conflict comes from, and it'd be fun to see some changelings who are like "But I...kind of like my new family just as much my queen! Can't I have both?"
There isn't a reason they can't, it's just that as Queen she'd be suspicious of such a thing producing changelings who don't want to listen to her/picking the families they sneak into over her, and quashing it even if they promised they would remain loyal. That's my reasoning for the invasion, perhaps this actually happened and a large group left. Taking over the country means they're her subjects whether they like it or not! *cough* of course as Ponibooru and Ponychan have shown we need to think about things going the other way as well. Perhaps 3-5% of ponies are now involved in a Scientology-esque 'changeling cult' except their Xenu is already here, and they pay with love, not money. |
