Watsonian: this thing
Doylist: They're called "princesses" because among the target demographic, "queens" are usually evil figures. Just look at early Disney films. That's proably the same reason that Chrysalis was referred to as a Queen. |

If we go by that, then Discord is an Usurper too,you know, considering the ponies ruled themselves before he even tried to stick his nose there. |

@1310302: If we're looking for in-universe explanations, I'm personally attached to the idea that the title of "Queen", in Equestrian culture, carries connotations of absolute rulership. And in a world where emotional connections are so important, both culturally and practically (i.e. how unicorn magic works), actually styling oneself as an autocrat is something a responsible ruler would see as a slippery slope. Put yourself too far above your people, and you won't be able to connect with them on a personal level anymore. And then where will you be?
So you call yourself a princess, instead, as a reminder that you can't be the kind of ruler that looks down on her kingdom from on high. |

Either this is true, or the throne belongs to Faust. |
