I just thought this was interesting about myself and I wanted to know if I was the only one.

If you want examples of fanfics of both kinds, I like Cupcakes (not in a sarcastic way), but Circle of Friends makes me cry.

...Not to be offensive (there'll be plenty of that in a bit from others with you merely posting Meta) but I think it'd be a bit more legitimate to post something about yourself if you got an account and weren't a faceless anon

I'm kinda 50/50 on Grimdark.
Some I'm OK with, others not.

Cupcakes I don't like because everyone believe depressed Pinkie Pie is a psychopathic murderer because of it. :\

Grimdark doesn't require characters to die. Case in point, the Silent Ponyville stories. Oh God, those are excellent grimdark.

You guys want a REALLY good grimdark fic to read? Read Windigo on fimfiction. It is amazing.

Well, I think it's just that it has a higher possibility of actually happening in the show instead of anypony dying? It's sadder because it has a lot more possibility behind it?

Eh, that's my explanation.

It's spelled "separated."

As for what's wrong with you, nothing. It's a reasonable reaction to two different kinds of stories that are intended to evoke very different emotions. Jus the way you personally deal with fictional characters

Well then your taste in Grimdark is shitty. Those stories have no substance.

Go read Windigo right now and correct your flawed taste in grimdark literature. Go do it right now, profligate!

I love grimdark stories too; I absolutely love just seeing something as innocent and pure as a pony character brutally murdered, it's just satisfaction on a primal level.

Don't much care for separation stories, however. Just kind of indifferent to them

I personally like Grimdark stories. I'm not sure why. Ironically enough, before ponies, I didn't like grimdark things. Hell, I'd never even heard of Creepypasta before! But after I read Cupcakes (yeah I know, "here we go again" -_-) I fell in LOVE with it. I don't know why, maybe it was the atmosphere the story created, or this complete contrast to Pinkie Pie's naive, yet innocent character. The story made me nuts for Psycho Pie (which to this day is still my favorite type of Pinkie Pie and part of the reason I believe Pinkie Pie is best pony ^_^) and anything she became associated with. And after reading Rainbow Factory, Sweet Apple Massacre, Pattycakes and Rocket to Insanity, I became ADDICTED to it. Grimdark is by far my favorite fanfic type now, even though I still do read the cute fanfics, the dramatic, the comedies, the short stories and occasionally *cough* ...clopfics... *cough*

Grimdark always makes me laugh because I realize I'm reading about multicolored ponies who weaponized friendship. My suspension of disbelief is strong enough for most things, but not for that.

@SendoRoba I have a theory on that. Grimdark is extreme, it's death at the hands of a psycho or unfathomable forces at work causing pain and suffering. Aging is natural, a very basic part of the world. Grimdark is unlikely and death from it generally doesn't bear thinking about. Aging happens to everyone and cannot be evaded. What's scary than: The horrible unlikely death or the absolute certainty of time?

I just finished reading the Windigo.

Positives, first time I didn't do more than chuckle at a grimdark story, obviously a lot of thought put into it, and I liked the diary format.

Negatives, still not actually scary, like at all, and despite the effort, did not care about the characters. Fairly boring really, and I found myself more interested in the few spelling and grammar errors I noticed in the story then anything else.

Its probably because killing someone doesn't take that much imagination to do. But a fic about separation takes a lot of work to pull off well. And most readers can actually relate with a seperation issue much more than "Pinkie becomes a mass murderer because grimdark lol".

To be perfectly honest, I would label BOTH of the things you just described as grimdark. Really I love anything of those sorts. Tragic? Scary? Grisly? Surreal? All of the above? Count me in. As long as it's good.

Candrew, Peers will hunt you down for not caring about the characters and for being bored by the story.

Well, I suppose I could have lied but honestly I didn't see the point. OCs in Equestria are pretty much uniformly boring, and Cath and Peers were no exception. It was obvious what 'Inner Bark' was from the first time it was mentioned and there was no real suspense involved since I never connected with the characters.

Oi, Anonymous who is ragging on candrew, not everyone is going to like everything. It's called difference of opinion and of taste. It's the same with any highly-rated story. You're going to have those who like it, and those who don't. Part of life and part of the business.

Why I don't like grimdark: Too formulaic. Too rote. Too shock-factor-centric.

I like any story that is written well, but when one hems itself to be a 'grimdark', then it has to live up to that narrow storytelling aspect. Writing about separation and all is not pleasant, but it could be good too.

But I think fans in general just go way too far with the dramatization to the point where it is just silly and gimmicky.
