I'm wondering how Equestria defended itself for 1000 years if the royal guard was so useless (minus Shining Armor apparently)
What? Did Celestia have to handle every threat herself before the elements of harmony?

Everybody seems to miss the little fact that Luna appears from outside the city when she takes up her night shift.

So presumably she was outside the city either, yeah, asleep, or scouting for this enemy that they were, you know, unaware of.

@ Karadros, honestly I thought Luna was just finishing up raising the moon in that scene. I mean she was coming down into the balcony from the moon.

The whole nocturnal Luna thing has always struck me as odd since Celestia seems to stay up just fine after the sunsets in Lesson Zero and during the Grand Galloping Gala. I think the idea that Luna was being more proactive and searching for the enemy makes more since.

my guess is that today's royal guard is just a ceremonial bunch that got left over from the military that handled shit before celestia and luna (when the pony-species had their own governments).
i really wouldn't be surprised if celestia had handled all threats herself after taking over

@ Candrew, Well to be fair, Celestia is the primary ruler of Equestria and is the older sister, so I'm thinking that she's the "face" of Equestria. So, she goes to important events like TGGG, and the sun has only set for a few minutes when she stopped Twilight in Lesson Zero.
Karadros
#1306744

Well to be fair, the only thing we've seen her lose against is a succubus insect pony thing supercharged by the power of Love, which appears to be the most powerful thing in the ponyverse.
P-51Mustang
#1306757

@ Kradros, that's also the only thing we've seen her fight against as well. She didn't fight Discord or Nightmare Moon.
Impious
#1306767

But see, that's my point.

For a while, I thought "Oh, it was just a bad day. Chrysalis was supercharged with stolen love juju, and slapped Celestia in the face with a magical nuke. Of course she lost." But then I realized... Since she lost the elements of harmony, she got defeated offscreen by NMM when she returned, repelled by Discord, and got her shit stomped by Chrysalis. And when the dragon was squatting in the mountain, she sent the grad student and her friends to handle it. Oh God, guys. She's the exact opposite of powerful.

She needs a hell of a lot more than a Rocky training montage set to Guile's theme. She needs to like, go on a big damn adventure and acquire some new magical artifacts.

@Mustang Fair enough, but I still find the idea that the sisters are primarily confined to their respective time of day to be silly. I can understand the concept that Luna is stronger at night and Celestia is stronger during the day though.

And to further my point... There's no shame in that. A soldier can't really fight a war without a gun, so to speak. But I was of the opinion that she was at least a very powerful magic-wielder.

But she's just a pretty winged unicorn with a really, really hilariously long lifespan. If ponies believed otherwise, they sure don't now. That has to be humiliating.
P-51Mustang
#1306806

@ Impious. Actually even WITH the EoH, she wasn't powerful. She was only able to banish NMM to the Moon, and it took The Mane Six to strip NMM away from Luna.

Also NMM and Discord's imprisonment were supposed to be permanent, they were not.
Impious

No, Jack. Think about it. Just think about it. She has lost pretty much every single fight we know she's been in, off screen or on.

As to Celestia being powerful: yes, her track record against cataclysmic events seems bad, but consider the following. Discord is chaos, specifically requiring the elements to defeat, Chrysalias was hopped up on love steroids, and Luna was her equal plus the power of hate. Also, in the case of Luna, even if she had the power, I don't think Celestia would have let her win just to give Twilight the chance to save Luna from NMM.

Also, Twilight is the element of magic and as such pretty high up in terms of power. Celestia stopped her want it need it spell with minimal effort. Celestia is strong, but plot demands the mane 6 saving the day.

I think this just proves that The Royal Sisters were never meant to be combat ponies. That's not where their talent lies. Their talent is controlling Celestial bodies and being fair and just rulers of their country.

Agree?

But Celestia herself said that it was basically her duty to protect her subjects, right before getting fried. If need be, they're supposed to be pretty damn formidable. But Celestia has yet to exhibit any of that.

I think that we can all agree that it was very un-flattering.

Keeeeeeep telling yourself that, Jack. Before, we were free to imagine her as power because she moves the fucking sun across the sky, but with he being hilariously inept in battle being all we really have to go on, she really isn't so amazing anymore.

I still love her though. But seriously, she needs a redemption moment. A big one.

You guys are imposing she lost in those instances other than in the episode Saturday. No one ever said she was defeated by Nightmare Moon when she returned. No one ever said she was defeated when Discord returned.

In both of those instances she knew that the Elements were the only way to Defeat the threat so she stood down and let the Elements take care of it.

IMO saying that Celestia is useless and Pathetic just because of Saturday is absolute Rubbish. Personally I think that she was holding back a bit even with the other ponies in the room. Had this been any other day she would have bug zapped Chrysalis into oblivion.

All this here is just overanalization not to be taken seriously but some of the things said kinda rustled my jimmies

i only think veery often long aged characters aren't handled with enouth care, or are simply too hard to handle story wise, because you don't have real life examples to base on
someone with over 1000 years should not necessary be super smart, but have enouth experience to find the best route of action, when celestia got beat it looked like she was a random character with no background and only some base power

be it for plot needs, or worf effect, she wasn't handled very well, or in an enouth credible way for me, but we can only rationalize what we get, the what if is for fiction :/

Well I kinda wish that Luna had some part in facing of with Chrysalis, with an awesome sun and moon themed attack.

But personally I think she was probably out patrolling for the threat with a division of the Royal Guard. I think she probably got Word of what happened when everything was over.

Celestia didn't attack because she's been in similar situation before, and knows the rule that all heroes must follow.

"You must allow a villain to finish his evil speech/rant before attacking".

Whoever made those rules was a fucking retard, though.

I agree with OP on the Luna thing.

@CottonTales

Because Celestia knows her guards are useless, why do you think she always sends Twilight and her friends to get shit done.

Well on Nightmare Moon, I've always been under the impression that she let herself loss because

1 she didn't want to fight her sister
2 her plan was to save Luna not fight her again
3 to do 2 she needed Twilight and co

I think this is a cast of fandom forgetting fanon stuff.

Celestia and Luna are not ment to be the all powerful gods fanon acts like they are, or are they the most powerful beings out there.

Like you could say normaly Celestia > Chrysalis but Power of Love = EoH so here Chrysalis > Celestia

Hell even Chrysalis seem shock that she beat Celestia did we all forget that?

I didn't really like Celestia being beaten by Chrysalis so i came up with a few theories to reconcile cannon with headcannon (feel free to poke holes):

1. The magic from love, like the magic of friendship, is special and trumps "regular" magic.

-This means Celesta was powerful enough to use regular magic to counter "love" magic and almost win.

2.Celestia was limiting her power so as not to harm any-pony in the audience and because she underestimated Chrysalis.

-This allows Celestia to be stronger then Chrysalis but under the circumstances forced to limit her power to the point where she can be (and was) defeated.

3. Batman gambit (again) aka Celestia allowed herself to be defeated.

-We are told that Chrysalis is doing this to feed her fellow changelings (they feed of love)... then why is she attacking Canterlot? if Love is all thats needed then surely any of the towns/cities in Equestria will do (and you have less chance of encountering the local Physical Goddess and getting her mad at you) Yet she is in Canterlot draining the love that Shinning Armor has for Princess Cadence/Cadance. While this makes her stronger it doesn't seem to do much for the other changelings who have to instead expend energy breaking the magical barrier around Canterlot. Basically Celestia's in a position where if she beats Chrysalis the remaining Changelings are without a leader and starving, so they're either going to scatter off into the rest of Equestria or continue to bash at the barrier until they starve to death and I don't think Celestia is the kind to let anything die if she can help it. So she chooses to lose (and Chrysalis can believe she's won) then tells Twilight to use the Elements of Harmony, knowing that they'd have to fight there way across Canterlot and more Importantly Chrysalis is right next to them listening. This means when Chrysalis drags the Mane 6 back (what else is her ego going to do) she'll believe then harmless allowing Twilight to free Princess Cadence/Cadance who will (unknowingly perhaps) use the magic of love to beat (and feed) the Changelings while expelling them from Equestria (and undoing/suppressing any phycological scars the inhabitants of Canterlot may have from the experience (they all seem "too" happy after being attacked for a wedding))...

(this also explains why Luna didn't reappear until afterwards, so she didn't disrupt the plan and was in position to intervene if something did go wrong)

4. Celestia's power (and Luna's) was connected to the Elements of Harmony so as their bond with the Elements grew weaker over the years so did they.

-This means Celestia no longer possesses the power she once had she can still do her job (raising/lowering the sun) and is still more powerful then the most powerful pony but is only a shell of her former self.

Other then Celestias defeat I really enjoyed the episode.
