One of them stabs the engineer while the other one uses it to propel himself into the carriage to take control and bring it to a stop.

The spears don't stop shit. The forcefield stops the train. The spears are made out of a special forcefield penetrating material that allows the guards to make a hole for the train.
What's stopping anyone from taking the spears? Heck if I know, honor system or something. |

wait... the forcefield unharms trains and the ponies but acts as a barrier to changlings. Perhaps they are less "stab train" and more "stab whatever gets pushed out fo the train" spe... wait if a changling gets trapped between the barrier and a wall in the moving train... |

The hafts of the spears are actually Immobile Rods. If the train tried to punch through, the guards would get to watch it get sheared into quarters. That, or they're just for show, and the barrier would have stopped it. |
