Twilight is the future leader of the Elements of Harmony and Cadence is a relative of the royal line. That's the pragmatic reason. The additional benevolent reason is that Twilight was an awkward nerdy kid without friends and Cadence is a very nice young mare that could be her friend.

My initial thought was something along the lines of #033. But Twi doesn't have her cutie mark yet, meaning this is before her school exam, meaning (presumably) before Celestia knew about Twi.

Cadence needs money. Just because she's royalty doesn't mean she's necessarily from a well off family. Equestria has a distinctive 19th century theme going on in many parts, especially considering the social structure - and that was a time where a prospering bourgeoise class (Twilights family possibly?) took over roles previously held solely by the aristocracy, yet the superior social status was still attributed to the aristocracy, no matter how broke they may have been. Hiring a princess as foalsitter could have been a great investment into Twilights future by her parents. |

Maybe Cadence babysat Twi because SA needed to spend time working/training and she and SA were already in love... It would allow SA to become captain of the royal guards and help the family bond. Plus, SA could have realized how lonely Twi was, with no friends except himself, and gotten her to be a friend and role model for her. Remember, we don't know how long ago this happened, only that it was before Twi's cutie mark. So the idea the two were in love for a few years before marriage isn't too strange. |
