Originally, changelings were a bundle of sticks or small fairy something under an illusion that was left after fairies kidnapped a child. Typically, it would pretend to get sick and then die before any suspicious behavior was noted. The kid that was kidnapped is then raised as a slave or soldier for the fey, IIRC.
At least I'm pretty sure that's how it went. |

452: Folk-lore recounts Changelings as having large heads with wrinkled features and swollen bellies but with spindly limbs. One might conclude that they were Children afflicted with disorders such as Progeria: Yet the Changeling phenomenon was reported throughout Western Europe and was associated with Fairies or other Spirit beings in every case. An eerie detail is that Wet-nurses and other Women would report being kidnapped to Fairy Dwellings in order to Nurse and interact with Changeling or Human Infants: Or to assist as Mid-wives. This aspect of the Changeling narrative is not gone from our Culture, for some reason, Abductee's, almost assuredly ignorant of Changeling Folk-lore: Report encountering Human-Hybrid infants with the exact same physical characteristics that Changelings were described as presenting. They are also made to interact with these Hybrid beings in the same exact fashion. Lets keep in mind that those claiming to have had congress with Fairies during some the times and regions where Changelings were common could well have faced accusations of Witch-Craft. As a Woman named Susan Swapper once did, a portion of Her account occurred when She was close to term with a Child and describes being visited as She slept next to Her Husband by: "Four Spirits in the likeness of two Men and Two Women, the Female leader of the group wore a Green Petticoat. Who said to Her 'Sue, come and go with Me, or else I will carry thee.' Susan's response was to shake Her slumbering Husband and beg him to hold on to Her: And He awakening turned unto Her and answered Her: 'Wherefore should I hold thee?' and She replied unto him again and said, 'Here is a thing that will carry Me away.' and he said unto Her, 'I see nothing.' and so turned about from Her . . .' |
