@115, there's already been woovie fics for Discord. Best one in my oppinion was the one were there was an entire race of Draconequus', and they were all super violent and used there powers for wanton destruction. Discord got sick of the carnage, and when he attained his demi-god powers he swore he would not use them to directly injure another living thing, just prank them silly. It was really well written, and it fits cause even at his worst mayhem, canon Discord never killed or physically harmed anyone that we know of.

441 that's a redundancy. Live at the expense of life, or did you think the plants the deer ate were not alive. Anyway, changelings eat emotions, not actual meat or vegetation as far as we know, so the trouble was that their queen wanted to dominate the being they fed off of.

@441 It's understandable you could think that. My own thought process is that the morality of a monsters actions are irrelevant to the part about preserving yourself and your own kind. However I will still recognize that the monster may have a valid perspective from its own side if it too is working to preserve itself and its own kind.

Well, while not Chrysalis in particular, there is this one idea I saw bandied about on a forum where BonBon is actually a Changeling who switched sides after falling in love with Lyra... and the reason Chrysalis mind controlled Lyra into becoming her bridesmaid was as a kind of "watch your serve me and before you and (s)he dies" thing...

Well, she's definitely straight-up evil, but you have to admit. She IS looking out for her starving people, evil though they may be. That's at least a little redeeming. Just a little. Not enough. And why do people associate her with chaos? She may be something along the lines of a Fae, but the Fae have order. It's just... a strange order we can't even begin to recognize. And she wasn't looking to burn the world down, just enslave ponies and their love for food.

Here's my take on a tragic backstory, combining existing theories with a bit of G1 stuff. Long ago, the Changelings were Flutterponies that dwell at Dream Valley, and Queen Chrysalis was their ruler, having succeeded her mother Queen Rosedust. Unlike her aloof her mother, Queen Chrysalis was originally a kind and loving mare who loved and care for many things, and under her leadership the Flutterponies helped many races with their magical powers, and were loved in turn. (The Ponies never knew this of course, having became torn by hatred, then they left their original homeland to what would become known as Equestria.) Then Discord came. He turns the world into a nightmarish realm where nothing made sense and everything was disharmonious and discorded. Seeing the all loving nature of the Flutterponies, as a sick joke Discord warped reality and changed Chrysalis and the Flutterponies: The bodies of Chrysalis and the Flutterponies became twisted by Discord, turning them from beautiful ponies with butterfly wings into horrible insectoid beings that only looked like ponies in outline. Their minds were twisted by their new forms as well; like bees, they lost their free will, and soon only Chrysalis remained in any sense as an individual, the voice and mind of the collective. But worst of all, they were stripped of their ability to feel love, but on the other hand were made dependent on it as sustenance. Even after Discord was defeated, Chrysalis and Flutterponies remained in their monstrous state, and they despaired. No creature on the world could accept them now with their monstrous appearance, seeing them as no more than just another of Discord's creation, unable to recognize their true identities as Flutterponies. Before long, without love, the new race began to starve, and Chrysalis desperately sought to find food for her now forsaken people. When no one would help them, she became frustrated and angered, and unable to feel love again, her anger and bitterness grew into hatred. If they cannot be help for her people, fine, they would be food, a just punishment for forgetting them and despising them after all they had done. To feed on love, Chrysalis and her people used their still potent magic to disguise and change their appearance. Hiding under a mask, they could pretend to be members of other races and people across the world, where they could gain their love with careful deception and manipulation, which they could then conquer them and drain them for all the love they desire. Thus, they were kind and loving Flutterponies no more, but ruthless and conquering Changelings. Such was their hunger, entire lands and races were drained of every bit of love, right down to their souls, leaving nothing but dead lands in their wake. Their original homeland, once verdant, is now a desert dominated by their enormous hives. And in the greatest hives of them all, Queen Chrysalis, now a cruel, vain, manipulative shadow of her former self, reflective of her new monstrous form, now spends her time plotting their next move, finding new lands and new races for which could conquer and satisfy their eternal hunger.

Sure it's natural for them to need food, it's also natural for the prey item to try and kill the shit out of the predator to keep from being food. So yeah you could in theory spin it as not being "evil" (though her actions indicate otherwise), but it's still incompatible with co-existence so conflict and violence is inevitable.
