I mean, Luna's body filled out and it's implied that Celestia's mane changed from pink to rainbow-ish, so it's probably just maturity. She did seem awful young in those flashbacks. |

What if all alicorns can change shapes based on age, emotion, or power? Let's use Luna for an example, since she has changed the most. As Nightmare Moon, she was tall, dark and menacing. She looked intimidating, and she was. But when she was reverted back to normal, she was very small, timid, and childlike. She no longer looked threatening, which could have helped Celestia realize how scared and lonely Luna really was. And now Luna is taller, and has more of a regal and powerful look, but is shorter than Celestia to keep people from thinking she wants to be more powerful or have her sister's power.
Maybe Cadence has the purple wings to add to a regal look one might expect a princess to have, but does not take a look like Luna or Celestia's because she doesn't want to look more powerful or different from her love. Just throwing that out there |

I have one theory, the marriage may be to signify union of their life, but also courtship. Which might mean that alicorn descendancy might come from Females mating with possibly highly regarded male members of a society. Just a theory, but I'll take as my headcanon until later. |
