I kinda like the Flutterpony theory better, since aparently, the Flutterponies lived off of love, so the lack there-of for them is causing their bodies to slowly rot away, but this could work too I guess |

And they got called changelings because they started to magically change their appeareance to look normal again. Over the time they got quite good at it, which is why they got called that.
But it drains power, so they mostly stay in their basic form. |

they have horns to disguise as unicrons, and wings to disguise as pegasi, but they're not either and they're not alicorns. They are being's who feed on the 'love' of others, they are a parasitic species, equine in origin, but not a member of ponykind. |

I suspect most are females as in most insect colonies. Then again most characters in this show are female.
The Changelings shown are probably all female worker/soldier types and males, which are not shown, remain in the hives as drones. |

Alicorns are elves, while the Changelings are the deceptive Dark elves. Especially the way Celestia acted with fierce hostility, rather than sitting back and growling at most. An age old foe maybe? |

I'd guess it to be a case of convergent evolution rather than corruption of an existing race. The changelings are physically weaker than ponies (Rarity could beat them up), don't have all that much in the way of magical power without love to support them, and are much weaker fliers than pegasi, but simply possessing characteristics of all pony types allows them to masquerade as any of the three, so they can infiltrate society and feed. Lacking a horn would make them unable to pass as unicorns, lacking wings would make them unable to pass as pegasi, so they developed both in order to widen their potential food supply. |
