Actually it's not. The canon interpretation was that dark magic was influencing her, but if you look at almost everything that uses dark magic the magic tends to make you go crazy without it necessarily possessing you. |

Would also point out that Luna seems to speak as if she was Nightmare Moon and does not treat it as a separate entity. Luna was Nightmare Moon and she knows it. |

NMM was more banished then slain. Luna body was purified and NMM spirit just disappeared or returned to her original place <since she is separate entity if I remember Faust words> |

Luna and Nightmare Moon are the same being, just that NM was Luna going bad. This whole thing of them being separate is fanon stuff, and as Anonymous #1297070 pointed out, Luna spoke as though Nightmare Moon and her were the same being. |

Also, Faust doesn't write for the show anymore and was only an adviser in the second season. So while what she says carries some weight, it isn't canon, ponybrohoof. As of season 2, Luna and Nightmare Moon are the same pony. |

From the perspective of the common citizen of Equestria Nightmare Moon WAS slain, as they saw her as separate to Princess Luna.
Ponyville doesn't count since they were actually there for Nightmare Moon's defeat/Luna's redemption. |
