I can just see Celestia reflecting on this though.
"How did this young upstart defeat me? Friendship is magic! And love is power. And I have... neither. Oh, God." I mean really. Of course Chrysalis won, if friendship is magic then love -the extreme and ultimate form of friendship- is pure power. If Celestia had love on her side, she would have vaporized the bitch, because she's obviously still more powerful. I think it's a great subversion, by the way. Love triumphs all, even when used by evil. It's not always a pure thing. |

I guess that Chrysalis is very powerful on her own. She's as big as Celestia too. I wouldn't be surprised when she was something like a god in her own lands. |
| Anonymous #1296886 2 months ago |
I can't help but to think that had Celestia won the magic deadlock, Chrysalis would've been sent to the Moon for 1000 years. |

Keep in mind she was using Borrowed Power. If this were any other day Celestia would have bug zapped her into oblivion. |

| Impious #1296921 2 months ago |
Well, even though she got her supple ass handed to her on a silver platter by the corrupted POWAH OF LOOOVE (ever bit as powerful) Chrysalis's attack just stunned her badly, enough to knock her unconscious. Mind you, she was struck with the force of her own attack AND the PowerofLove. So at the very least she's tough as nails. A beam of raw sunlight fired at a being of apparent darkness? Would have been an instant kill.
Still, my headcanon is confirmed. Celestia lost because no one loves her. |

Celestia being undefeatable or the god of equestria are all fanbase assumption. We don' t really know if she is really immortal, from what we know she can simply have a very long lifespan. |
| Anonymous #1296927 2 months ago |
Impious: Celestia is far from powerless. It wasn't just any old love she was fighting against, you see. It was True Love, cultivated and absorbed over a good length of time. And in a world where Friendship is Magic, nothing stands against True Love - which is the brilliance of Chrysalis' plan, really. |

@ClownDicks
Perhaps, but that kind of superficial love pales in comparison to Shining Armor's love for his wife, of which Chrysalis was feeding off of. And Chrysalis seemed legitimately terrified of being vaporized, and surprised that she was able to defeat Celestia. Still moot though. Celestia is a powerful eldritch deity that moves the sun, but like I keep saying, friendship is magic so love is power. Celestia doesn't have either, so she got her ass whooped. That should be a major plot point in Season 3, I think. Celestia is well aware of this: Ultimately, the friendship reports were meant for her because a thousand years of monotony and loneliness have rendered her profoundly out of touch and incapable of forming healthy relationships. If it weren't for Luna and Twilight, she'd probably be emotionally barren. |

| Anonymous #1297052 2 months ago |
@Impious: You're being too angsty about all this.
The love Shining Armour and Cadence shared was obviously "True Love (tm)". "True Love (tm)" defeats everything. It's like Rock-Paper-Scissors-OrbitalCannon in these kinds of shows. Queen Chrys was clever because she drained the love from Shining in the days up to and including his wedding day. The "True Love (tm)" was at it's peak strength. Not even the power of the sun could rival it at this point. Your arguments that Celestia is a sad and lonely creature because of losing to the unbridled power of "True Love (tm)" is rather weak and unfounded. |

Where are you getting that Celestia's power is directly linked to how much she is loved?
Its cannon that love/friendship can be used as power but this is obviously not the only source of power in equestria else baddies like NMM/Discord would have been powerless. |
| Anonymous #1297214 2 months ago |
@Impios: Burden of proof is on the one making the statement.
Celestia is a side character with little screentime outside of being around Twilight, and as such we can't say who else she interacts with. That's not proof of her not having friends, though, and can't be used as an argument. There is no data indicating either way. But I will say one thing for certain. Twilight is her friend. Twilight's idea of the perfect Gala night is to spend it in Celestia's company, talking about their mutual interests and simply spending time together. That's canonically her idea of a perfect evening. Do you have a friend who would say the same? She's afraid of disappointing Celestia, yes, but it's not fear of a tyrant fuelling that, it's her character flaws. Her panic attacks are partly due to her huge respect for her, and partly due to the fact that Twilight is very insecure about how other people see her and cannot bear disappointing people's expectations of her (when she hides her talent in Boast Busters, when she can't decide who gets the ticket in Ticket Master, when she keeps the secrets in Green is Not Your Colour, etc), and partly because overreaction is her biggest character flaw (Lesson Zero, It's About Time, Swarm of the Century, Bird in the Hoof, when she rejects her friends in Return of Harmony P2, when she challenges Cadence brashly in Royal Wedding Part 1, you get the idea). As for lover, Celestia doesn't seem to have one. That doesn't mean she's without love - is Twilight lonely and weak because she doesn't have a lover? Of course not. But Cadence and Shining ARE lovers, and such can use the coveted "True Love (tm)". |
| Impious #1297232 2 months ago |
But see, that's my point. Apparently friendship is the basis of magic in Equestria, and love is just the extreme form of magic. Chrysalis was just using stolen, fake love, and even that was enough to power up her magical attack to the point of overwhelming Celestia. If Chrysalis's superficial, stolen true love was able to defeat Celestia, then the love and friendship powering Celestia's magic is even weaker than that. That would have to mean that Celestia isn't really loved by anyone if a dark succubus can defeat her with false love.
Hey, I know it sounds stupid but I'm just going by the show's rules. |

| Impious #1297317 2 months ago |
She wields the element of honesty, though.
To be honest I'd like to be wrong, because if I'm right it means Celestia's just another woobie. I'm tired of woobies in this fandom. Even if she ISN'T really loved at all, I'd like to think she's stronger than that. Still got beat by True!Love though. |
| Anonymous #1297371 2 months ago |
@Impious:
Chrysalis was NOT using fake love, she was not using superficial love, she was using the pure and true love. Don't dismiss it as weak to support your hypothesis, True Love trumps EVERYTHING, especially in a show like this. That was the point of the scene, showing the purity of Shining's love, and giving the villain the reigns. It's outright said that they feed off the love one has for another. Chrysalis' magic is fuelled by that true love. Again, it was not superficial or fake, she was feeding directly off Shining. That same love fuelled the massive barrier spell that cast the entire chageling army out of Canterlot, it's NOT to be underestimated. The only thing stronger that we've seen is the Elements of Harmony, which is the magic that utilises friendship. The only comparable spell is in Hearth's Warming Eve where the trio's newfound friendship helps defeat the Windigoes. No other individual's magic in the series has been shown to be fuelled by love or friendship. These special cases are all examples of ponies working in tandem, be it for good (the mane 6 and the Elements) or for evil (Chrys disguising herself and drinking in Shining's love for Cadence). You're making a pretty big and shaky assumption by stating that Celestia's magic is dependant on her friendship/love. That's not supported by canon. |

chrysalis (had) borrowed love power celestia (had) no love power (not own nor borrowed) chrysalis won i get impious is saying if both had love power, or both hadn't it, maybe celestia would have won and if so, why at the moment celestia had no power of love too? |

@378 yup, and the quality is also low |
| Anonymous #1297392 2 months ago |
@ Impious:
Anyway, didn't I already show you that Twilight is Celestia's friend? That puts a hole in your "Celestia is all alone" hypothesis. |
| Impious #1297421 2 months ago |
So maybe I've let myself get a bit too convoluted.
My point is Celestia would have won if she too had the power of love on her side. She doesn't. |
| Anonymous #1297443 2 months ago |
@Impious
What about Chrysalis being badass enough to take her down. Yeah, i' ve seen she was surprised too for overpowering her but just judging that no other pony tried to attack her, included the captain of royal guards Shiny Armor and another alicorn princess, we can assume she is not weak at all. |
| Anonymous #1297447 2 months ago |
@Impious:
Agreed. It was a subversion of the norm where the good guys use True Love against the villain. I disagree that it implies Celestia is alone and unloved. It just means she's single. |
| PonyRIG #1297461 2 months ago |
@upanon: you forgot than Shining was brainwashed at the moment |
| Anonymous #1297496 2 months ago |
@PonyRIG: After days, perhaps longer, of having the love sucked out of him.
Chrys planned it, and spent a long time aggregating power from Shining. |
| Impious #1297601 2 months ago |
You know, it would have been gloriously evil if Celestia had broken free and said something like "You may have stolen Shining Armor's love, but I still have the love of my ponies!" and Chrysalis laugh and say something like "Oh, do you now?" and beaten her a SECOND time.
But I'd rather her not be alone and unloved. She's too damn nice a pony NOT to be loved, even if it's just respect for a ruler. That's better than nothing. I still think it'd be an interesting plot point if the reports were always meant for her though. Canon has shown that she's not really the best at social gatherings. |
| Ananonymous #1297713 2 months ago |
or rather the social gatherings aren't the best to her :P |
| CogWeaver #1297731 2 months ago |
@Impious
Um... yes she is. In fact, pretty much all the times we've seen Celestia at social gatherings she's been nothing but reserved. Pinkie eating her cupcake, Celestia herself remaining calm during the whole Gala, Celestia being her graceful self at the endings of both starting episodes for both seasons, Celestia when Pinkie ate the entire cake, and pretty much Celestia during these episodes even when she curtly scolds Twilight for being a jerk to "Cadence". |
| Impious #1297781 2 months ago |
Okay, that's just the effect she has on others then, what with how high-strung ponies are around her. It was silly of me to interpret that as being socially inept. If anything, it's the other ponies being socially inept and being mistrusting of Celestia.
I'm thinking too hard, and it's starting to show. Let's just call the whole thing off and say she was having a bad day. |

I used to use the example "she's a god like deity... but can't stop a swarm of insects", but this is even better. She's clearly powerful yes, but the idea she a quasi-deity was always precarious. Say what you want the power used to defeat her was absorbed from ONE pony and depending on how much stock you put in the play, her job used to be done by just 13 powerful unicorns. (actually that might be a fair gauge of her power overall based on this incident. Being as powerful yourself as a dozen of the planets best mages would certainly be impressive, but not GOD like) |
