Indeed. Here's some fridge horror: Luna was Celestia's only friend. The elements of harmony require the magic of friendship. When Luna became NMM, Celestia lost her only friend. Therefore, she was unable to save her only friend and blood relative from a miserable fate because ultimately, Celestia has no friends. And then, instead of helping her cope with the fact that to her knowledge at that time she had killed her own sister, the ponies of Equestria apparently celebrated Luna's demise. So Celestia was lauded as a hero for killing her family.
