This is how I always saw Discord. There is no redeeming factor; Under that playful exterior is a complete monster that delights in causing profound suffering, to an almost sexual extent. He's a absolute bastard. |
| Glord #1286194 2 months ago |
+1 for Impious. |
| CogWeaver #1286209 2 months ago |
@Impious, yeh, I always saw this too, just only had good "in him" with Starswirl, much like NmMoon and Luna.
So I agree he as a person has no redeeming factor. But I wouldn't say he can't be redeemed like NmMoon ==> Luna. |
| Impious #1286233 2 months ago |
I don't buy that he was Starswirl. He's an eldritch deity with sociopathic tendencies. Like I said, no redeeming factor. If he was once Starswirl, the is the ability to pity him at having fallen so far. But he's an unforgivable bastard. He really does deserve his AndIMustScream fate.
The Discord/Celestia shipping is horribly tragic for that very reason, one, because you know it is doomed to fail horribly. And two, because Celestia was more than likely very horribly taken advantage of by the one being that would be capable of relating to her and spending eternity with her, other than Luna of course. Is it really surprising at all that she despises him? |
| Gittonsxv #1286252 2 months ago |
Impious, I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE who hated discord and saw him as a monster! |
| CogWeaver #1286264 2 months ago |
No one really pities NmMoon for Luna falling to become her, they pity Luna. So you could pity Starswirl, but Discord can still be the unforgivable monster that we've known him to be.
And no, it's not surprising at all that she hates him, and I really do not get Dislestia shipping when speaking in-character. Of course my reasoning for that is that she had a thing for Starswirl, and wants Discord to pay for - in her eyes - corrupting/devouring Starswirl. idk, I think it makes lots of sense |

What frustrates me is, if you do ANYTHING that shows Discord as being anything other than a mischievous prankster, people will be screaming that he's "out of character" or "ruined."
Why does it feel like almost nobody actually WATCHED Return of Harmony? Discord is not some silly troll. He's a sadistic, fucking bastard. Didn't anyone else hear the screaming during Celestia's story? Didn't anyone else see him break Twilight's friends just so he could drag out her torture? Didn't anyone else see what he did to Equestria, all the destruction he caused, all the ponies he drove insane, just because he felt like it? If they DO bring Discord back, I don't want him in stone. I want him DEAD. Vaproized like that centaur from the first MLP series. He doesn't deserve sympathy or pity. The only thing he should get is a slow, painful demise. |

@ClownDicks
Kids show, remember? He is seen laughing at the expense of others and often manipulates the laws of reality for the sake of his own amusement, often at the cost of others. Among other things, Discord reverses the ponies' behavior, making Twilight Sparkle miserable and depressed, and generally causing ridiculous and horrific things to happen. Discord is arrogant and overconfident, as he underestimated the ponies' ability to restore their friendship and wield the Elements of Harmony. Despite having a fondness for anarchy and chaos, he can become easily annoyed if things don't go according to his plan; he becomes impatient when he cannot corrupt Fluttershy as easily as the other ponies. He's not the joker here. Again, kids show. |

#1286529 Exactly what I was saying. With adults watching this, they seem to think it's geared to *them*, and they get pissy and overly analytical on episodes so they can complain about it because it's not what *they* wanted to happen. |

| CogWeaver #1286558 2 months ago |
@545
No, we get pissy and complain because it's not telling a story. People want to be told stories, not predictable one-shots with no value to the rest of reality when they're gone like with Nightmare Moon. We don't want Discord to be another dumb one-shot, we want him to be part of a greater story. |

@CogWeaver
Makes a closing statement, add another comment. Okay. And what's this "we" your talking about? And what else would of happen? You want this to be Naruto so hard it hurts. These are Slice-of-Life stories about friendship, not story arcs that take 50+ hours to beat. Every other antagonist were one shots, what are you crying about? |
| CogWeaver #1286603 2 months ago |
@572
First, I never made a "closing statement", that was ClownDicks Second, "we" was toward 545's comment talking about Adults who watch this show. Third, why is everything "wrong" in anon's mind always boil down to animes and such? >Spongebob (or any other weird cartoon show) Anon: "Pff, wow this is stupid, but I honestly don't give a fuck" >Anime (take your pick) Anon: "OH GOD NO MUST DESTROY KILL IT WITH FIRE" And I actually hate most Animes/Mangas. They're predictable and stupid most of the time. Fourth, "Slice-of-life" does not equal "one-shot". Slice-of-life is a way to tell a story, yet an overarching story still stands (see the events leading up to the Grand Galloping Gala in first season). One-shot, however, is something happens only once and no matter how monumental it might have been, there is absolutely no continuity to it as if it never happened in the first place. Fifth, it's the very fact that every other antagonist was a one-shot that I'm "crying" about. I want something different, something less predictable. I want a story being told, some continuity with past struggles with a past villain. It doesn't have to be Discord, Discord's just a villain with a lot of awesome potential were his character more fleshed out than it already has been. |
| Anonymous #1286617 2 months ago |
CogWeaver
#1286603 In other words, you want an anime. The literary term refers to a storytelling technique that presents a seemingly arbitrary sample of a character's life, which often lacks a coherent plot, conflict, or ending. The story may have little plot progress and little character development, and often has no exposition, conflict, or dénouement, with an open ending. So, yeah, they're *all* one shots. that's kinda what Slice of Life means. And Discord is omnipotent. How, exactly, would he exist in the same world as the rest of the cast? What would he do? The only way for him to be an recurring villain is to take most (if not all) his power away or some shit. It's the same reason the Rowdy Ruff Boys were killed off in the same episode they were made in. You can't have a villain that's more powerful than the main cast in every way in a Slice of Life style show. It would be *so* boring after a while. |
| Impious #1286619 2 months ago |
Look at this shitstorm. How tasty!
My point is that it's never proven that Discord ISN'T a complete monster. He's a jerk with very obvious sociopathic tendencies and no real redeemable qualities, that takes sadistic pleasure in ruining lives and making others suffer needlessly. That makes him evil. There is no counterargument. Until it is shown in a flashback that he's just a whiny angsty guy that is crying out for attention because his mother never hugged him, it will remain as such. Discord is a bastard. |

#1286619 Yes, one hundred times yes, someone here with a brain! I kinda want to see what the other draconequus' are like (if there is any). You know, the word "draconequus" is composed of the Latin "draco" and "equus", meaning "dragon horse". So if Spike and Rarity *do* have a kid... nah. |
| Anonymous #1286637 2 months ago |
@CogWeaver:
That's perfectly valid man,but remember that this show isn't about long story arcs,but like Anon572 said,episodes that are auto-conclusive.And that's one of the strong points of this series. Sure,some of the episodes have references to another episodes and little continuity nods,but it's more of a Slice-Of-Life format(except the two paters,of course)take Adventure Time,for example,it's a bit similar to MLP in that aspect,while Regular Show is heavily Slice-of-Life. |
| peony #1286653 2 months ago |
These comments are interesting, but I have one crazy question.
Did I miss an episode with a bunch of backstory in it? Elaboration - where did the Discord is Starswirl stuff come from? That seems totally random to me. Something to think on, Discord had been in stone for 1000 years, to get him there may have meant his powers would have been severely subdued by Celestia. Perhaps the chaos he created wasn't nearly as bad because he was still recovering from whatever magic sealed him. His powers somewhat limited. Hence Celestia x Chaos time was hell in Equestria, Mane 6 x Discord time less so. |
| Anonymous #1286663 2 months ago |
@peony:
If only I could give you a high five... That's EXACTLY what I've been thinking. |
| Impious #1286665 2 months ago |
I kind of believe that too, Peony. We saw NOTHING of Discord's power. Celestia was clearly very perturbed by his return, for a being of her immense power to be afraid of anything, that something has to be pretty fucking terrifying.
Granted, maybe she's still just really angry at him for bleaching her coat pink or something. Given the show's context, it's probably that innocent. But given the show's context, Discord's still evil. Just look at it from a kid's point of view. Discord intentionally destroys the relationships between friends and loved ones for personal amusement, and generally just ruins your day because he can. Evil. |
| Anonymous #1286700 2 months ago |
I love how people paint Celestia like she is almighty. How many powers have you guys saw her do?
And don't come with the "She lifts the sun argument". For all we know the sun of their world could be mashed paper. |
| Impious #1286721 2 months ago |
Well, my argument stands there too. It's implied that she's at the very least a very powerful magic user, so until we learn that she is just a flimsy, leggy pegasus with a horn, that's the going theory. There's no real evidence to the contrary. She's actually pretty close to a Greek God, in that she's powerful but prefers a very hands-off approach, preferring to use mortals to further her own ends. Not necessarily malicious, if not still manipulative. |
| peony #1286733 2 months ago |
#1286700
She's the ruling body of Equestria. Wielded the elements of harmony, possibly alone. Earlier in her life when she was perhaps even more powerful she sealed the embodiment of Chaos in stone. Oh and she not only teaches Twilight, possibly the next most powerful magic user personally, but it's inferred when Twilight first found her magic that Celestia stopped her going out of control, when 4 or 5 other magic users assessing her couldn't do shit. I would say she is pretty damned powerful by pony standards. |
| Anonymous #1286764 2 months ago |
@700:
And I love how you derailed the thread talking about Celestia's powers when we were all talking about Discord evilness. |
| Anonymous #1286826 2 months ago |
IfDiscord ever comes back, there needs to be a scene where he makes up a ridicously angsty backstory (A fake one, mind you) that parodies the fandom's tendacy to try and paint him as a poor wittle misguided soul.
Also, I want to see a scene where he gets his powers away, and goes psycho trying to futilely get them back, while Celestia points out that for all his love of chaos, Discord can't handle the unpredictability of real life without his reality-warping powers solving everything with a finger snap. |
| Impious #1286888 2 months ago |
That would be hella hilarious. The first one, I mean. And the second point is poetic justice at it's finest. Let him go free, but reduce him to nothing. |

I don't know what Luna and Discord's relationships are like....
Perhaps Discord really has no feelings toward luna and only sees her as Alicorn #2 or "The second banana" He like just killed her or sentenced her to some deliciously evil fate.... Now Celestia is his real target... A conveyer of balance: An entity that seems godlike, pure, and incorruptible... The perfect target...... |
| Anonymous #1297425 2 months ago |
(This is a new Anon, just to make it clear)
>MLP: FIM is a kids show, but a good one. The following statemen is personal headcanon which looks at a more mature direction< Alot of talk seems to be aimed at what Discord should have done and how he should have been to truely be evil. Evil can be an external source, but it can also be internal. And their effect is vastly diffrent, depending on the aim of the villan. If he does something evil then the hero will come and fight him. If the villan instead brings out the hero's own inner evil, then the hero will not come bothering the villan. Hell, the "Hero" may even start doing evil himself! In my book, that's the most evil act of all: To break someone's will, to destry whatever icon they may have had and leave them with nothing left. And that's what I saw Discord do. He destroyed the Elements of Harmony, not by harming them physically, but by mendling with their mind. Is we presume that the Mane Six are known as the Elements of harmony, then killing them could have resulted making them "Icons", as they would have dies fighting for what they believed (A bit bias, as this would account for Ponies to value icons in the same manner as humans). Instead by breaking them, Discord effectively makes the heroes destroy themselves, and thus whatever symbolism they might have hold for the common pony (again presuming same reaction as humans). Most villans tries to kill the hero, but fails as the hero fights back. Break them instead and their will to resist is gone. And on the note of Discord's powers, and why he may not have protraited the same level of destruction as Celestia has told he did once: Discord had just broken free. He needed to gather strength before pulling out the big guns, that and he was only free for a few hours (Difficult to say, as night and day shifted to rapidly). More importantly, his power is Chaos. Most likely his powers are fuled by chaos as well. If that's the case then the harmony of Equestria would have had a negative effect on his powers, which could explain why he didn't change the enviroment around him as he first appeared. He needed to make some minor chaos in order to get the fuel to do some more serious chaos and so on; It's a model which would result in increasing amount of chaos, and more serious effects on everypony and everything. The end result would be the level of chaos that Celestia told of. Going by this model, Discord would have had an interest in keeping the Mane Six alive and only discording them: the chaos within that group would be the first fuel he needed in order to hit ponyville. And from ponyville then hit a larger area, maybe even all of Equestria. He may have started as a "troll" but his intention was not idle, far from it. (At least that's my headcanon. Like it or not, now it's out there to be either ignored or discussed). |
