And Discord tries to stop the 6 elements of chaos?

Or maybe this happens far in the future, and this castle is old Canterlot, and Celestia -a thousand years prior- lost her shit because nopony loves her for who she is, rather than for what she represents. They both call it square.

@659

Now THAT would be neat

But what would drive Celestia toward being tempted by evil?

She doesn't seem as if she'd have much to ever get jealous over Luna about?

Maybe Celestia's still frightened of Luna... afraid she might go back... so the fear starts to eat at her.

Nah. See, the irony is that the situation would be similar to Luna's descent to madness, but the reasons are the exact opposite. Luna was loved as a pony, but she desperately wanted to be as revered and respected as her sister. Celestia is worshipped and adored like a god -and she is the sun, ponified- but no one really gives a fuck about her personally. That's pretty much canon. She just wants to be casual and relax and be seen as a fellow pony, but everyone is terrified of her. Hell Twilight should trust her the most and she's afraid she'll be erased from existence for being late. Although that's just paranoid Twilight for you.

And this is if Sadlestia, Moodylestia and Regretlestia are all canon. For all we know, Celestia fucking loves the attention.

Or, as Faust all but confirmed, it was the work of a third party. Last time didn't go as well as he/she planned, but maybe using the elder sister would go better...

On a related note, my take is that, in a universe like Diane Pie's Celestia (as a result of whoever's sorcerous machinations) starts feeling that her people are ingrates. She's done nothing but sacrifice for them. Centuries of it. And what have they sacrificed? Nothing. Zero. And now, they're not gonna take her kindness for granted. 'cause who's the boss?

It's her.

And Luna is still the emotional one when the dust settles centuries later. Still the younger one and all.

Isn't it obvious? Look at the way Celestia is treated. She's portrayed as a cruel tyrant, a sadistic prankster, and a serial rapist on the basis of no evidence whatsoever. She can't even cross the street without being accused of trolling the sidewalk. She is demonized for saying and doing things that would be considered perfectly fine if anyone else did them. She finally decided that if everypony wanted her to be the Solar Tyrant, then that it what she would be.

That's not really canon though. Although if it was, a thousand years of that and she'd be justified in glassing Equestria and starting over. Ungrateful profligates!

^^

That's just fandom. Canon wise its what Impious said, she wants to be seen as just another pony.

@ Clown
It seems to be more like the third party just pushed Luna over the edge, since she says "they never liked us"

It'd be pretty week if she just up and got possessed randomly, so I like to think if there was a third party involved, it was one of those deals where the victim (Luna) started the process willingly because of her own flaws. You have to invite the devil in.

Well, if and when Celestia goes off the deep end, it will be fast and brutal. She's known for her composure and stoicism; when she loses it, it will be a very sudden and very violent loss of control.

An interesting idea for an episode, where the main characters go to a parallel universe when the princess' roles were reversed

Tabby - turn in your Canterlot Propaganda badge,, you're way too obvious *yawn*

And yeah, it's not like immortal demi-god pony sending six weak beings to deal with problem (and nearly die each time) 4 times is unusual or something. Any good ruler who could solve the problem herself in 3 seconds flat does it instead!
