Not likely, but possible.

That's what Spike had said about zombie ponies, that day Apple Bloom had worked up the courage to visit Zecora and the Everfree Forest for the first time. The excitement of that day, Zecora's mystery and the Poison Joke fiasco, had driven the idea from the filly's mind long ago, but as she quaked in her horseshoes, the phrase pulled itself into her thoughts just as three more rotten things pulled themselves from the earth in front of her.

Not likely, but possible.

Heart hammering in her chest, Apple Bloom whipped her head this way and that as more decrepit bodies pried themselves loose from ruined buildings, dancing backwards on her hind legs as another hoof pierced the ground underneath her, fighting to emerge against the filly's weight.

Not likely.
But DEFINITELY happening.

The zombie ponies already loose from heir graves took a collective step forward, those with heads and flesh still clinging on gurgling to her in a mournful mockery of Equestrian.

She had the Mark...

She had to go...

This very night...

We will protect you...

The same fate...

The undead slowly shuffled inward toward the filly, attempting to encircle her, entreat her to stay with them, and a wave of horror swept over her, threatening to freeze her where she stood. Gritting her teeth and hunkering down, Apple Bloom tried to throw off her terror and indecision, forcing memories of her sister's bravery and her brother's strength and her granny's wilyiness into her head, filling her with resolve. Spying a break in the encroaching circle, the filly suddenly sprung toward it, willing all her strength into her legs as her horseshoes found purchase in the greasy earth. Head held low, Apple Bloom tore past her would-be captors and sped through the narrow alley between the ruined houses, galloping as fast as she could toward Sunnytown's entrance and the Everfree beyond.

Behind her, the murmur of the zombies' reassurances turned into growls and shrieks of rage as the lumbering dead realized that their guest would not make things easy for them. Darting back out onto the main street, Apple Bloom's made as straight a line toward the forest as she could, weaving between fallen roofs and overturned carts. However, as she ran, more and more undead began emerging from the ground around her, pushing up through a rotten rainbarrel, standing in an empty doorway or rising from beneath the moth eaten blanket in the back of a wagon. Urging herself on faster, the filly could see the lanterns marking the entrance clearly in the dark, even as the dead began crowding in on her once more. Just a little further, she thought. Just a little further, and she'd be in the forest. And, once she was in the forest,  just a little further still, till she found Twilight or Zecora, and then, why, it would just be one more short walk till she was back on good old Sweet Apple Acres, laughing about the while thing with her family over pie and a big glass of milk.

Heart swelling at the thought, Apple Bloom forced a smile as she dodged another zombie lurching toward her, forcing her onto a hard left before she could right herself. With the entrance only fifteen hoof-lengths away, the filly's smile grew larger, the taste of pie filling her mouth, when out from underneath her something stirred. Bursting out of the ground just in front of her was a monstrous, skeletal head, a draft horse almost as big as her brother struggling to pull itself free from the earth. Apple Bloom had but a split second to look it in its empty eye socket before the thing's bony  jaw latched onto her foreleg, throwing her to the ground as grimy teeth sank into her flesh.
